Calculate Field<\/a><\/strong> is a powerful geoprocessing tool used to batch calculate field values for multiple records at once. The tool uses expressions that can be simple, such as a single number or text, or complex multi-line scripts written in the language of your choice (Python, Arcade, SQL, or VBScript).<\/p>\n

In ArcGIS Pro 3.6<\/strong>, there is a new way to calculate field values directly in the attribute table using the Calculate Field toolbar<\/a><\/strong>!<\/p>\n

Find the Calculate Field toolbar<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Open the attribute table of a map layer or table.<\/p>\n

On the table toolbar, you may notice the Calculate<\/strong> button looks a little different. Miss the geoprocessing tool? <\/em>Don\u2019t worry! You can access the tool (and toolbar) from the Table<\/strong> ribbon tab as well as the right-click menu on a field header. You can also access the tool from the Geoprocessing<\/strong> pane.<\/p>\n

How it works<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

Think of the toolbar as a streamlined version of the Calculate Field<\/strong> geoprocessing tool. Don\u2019t be fooled by its smaller size, the toolbar shares many of the same options as the tool and even uses it to perform field calculations.<\/p>\n

Toolbar Components<\/span><\/h2>\n

The Calculate Field toolbar includes the following components:<\/p>\n

(1) Target Field<\/strong>\u2014Choose an existing field to update with new values.
\nTip:<\/em><\/strong><\/span> Click the column header of the field you want to edit in the table before opening the toolbar to automatically populate the Target Field.<\/em><\/p>\n

(2) Expression<\/strong>\u2014Type values and field names, or use the Add Fields to Expression<\/strong> button to build an expression.<\/p>\n

(3) Language<\/strong>\u2014Choose the language used by the expression.
\nExpressions can be written in Python<\/code>, Arcade<\/code>, or SQL<\/code>.
\nNote<\/strong>: Expression syntax is different for each language. For example, field names are indicated differently for each language, and even text can be different (Python and Arcade use double quotes, whereas SQL uses single quotes).<\/em><\/p>\n

(4) Calculate<\/strong>\u2013Click to run Calculate Field.
\nUse the menu options for more control.<\/p>\n
