These 30-meter resolution layers, from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mrlc.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Multi-Resolution Land Characteristics (MRLC)<\/a> consortium, offer a consistent, yearly snapshot of land cover use and change for the lower-48 states from 1985 to 2024:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=32e2ccc6416746a9a72b4d216813f84f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USA Annual NLCD \u2013 Land Cover<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=bc608df727ae488a86136c1abeb22a96\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USA Annual NLCD \u2013 Land Cover Change<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=54c99d48237d4a5f9f102dfbefd49024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USA Annual NLCD \u2013 Land Cover Confidence<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=ae0f0084477049e9a0ae5703e6fcbe38\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USA Annual NLCD \u2013 Date Spectral Change<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=6df535f263dd44f489365eed49461a38\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USA Annual NLCD \u2013 Fractional Impervious Surface<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=640acb27325d4344ab843a4beaf21f20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USA Annual NLCD \u2013 Impervious Descriptor<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Critical for understanding the impacts of natural processes and human activity on the landscape, these time-series fill in the significant temporal gaps of the <a href=\"https:\/\/livingatlas.arcgis.com\/en\/browse\/?q=NLCD%20Legacy#q=Legacy+NLCD\">Legacy NLCD<\/a> collection. Using an ensemble of chained deep-learning models and harmonic time series analysis, this new classification methodology determines detailed land cover characteristics from historic Landsat imagery \u2013 for a full 40 years!<\/p>\n<p>In the Land Cover product, NLCD defines 20 distinct land cover types, including four classes specifically devoted to urban development density. (Note that <em>Dwarf Scrub<\/em>, <em>Sedge\/Herbaceous<\/em>, <em>Lichens<\/em>, and <em>Moss<\/em> are not present in the current 48-state release, but will be included when Alaska and Hawaii are added in a future NLCD your research interests lie in studying urban growth patterns, the loss of wetlands, or the impacts of wildfire on forests, you may only be concerned with a subset of NLCD\u2019s many land cover classes. To simplify the filtering process, an extensive set of <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.arcgis.com\/en\/pro-app\/latest\/help\/analysis\/raster-functions\/processing-template-manager.htm\">Processing Templates<\/a> are available for each NLCD service.<\/p>\n<p>These processing templates provide a handy shortcut for filtering the map to just show the classes you need \u2013 whether it\u2019s for cartographic or analytical purposes. Each template provides a unique raster function chain and styling to change the default rendering or isolate individual land cover classes on-the-fly. Simply select the template you want using the <em>Processing templates<\/em> gallery in the Online map viewer, as shown in the animation on the right.
