In this article, we\u2019ll show you how you can use the snap chip to elevate your editing workflows.<\/p>\n<h2>Snapping from A to Z<\/h2>\n<p>You already use <strong>X<\/strong>,<strong>Y<\/strong> coordinates to define a location on a map. Naturally, what comes next is <strong>Z. <\/strong>This is the coordinate that measures the distance above (or below) ground, often representing height, or elevation. At a busy junction, you may have multiple features such as water lines, fittings, and valves that occur <em>at different heights<\/em>. With the snap chip, you can now easily view the height, or <a href=\"https:\/\/support.esri.com\/en-us\/gis-dictionary\/z-value\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Z-value<\/strong><\/a>, of each feature in a clear, organized list. That value is automatically applied to your point or vertex. Its <em>that<\/em> easy. With the snap chip, you can now see Z-values at a glance and pick exactly the one you want to snap to.<\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<h3>Best Practices<\/h3>\n<p>When a layer has Z-values, we say that it is z-enabled. Here&#8217;s a quick run down for how values get set when you&#8217;re <a href=\"https:\/\/doc.arcgis.com\/en\/web-editor\/12.1\/create-and-edit\/z-m-values.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">working with Z-enabled data:<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Default values:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When the layer has a <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.arcgis.com\/en\/server\/latest\/publish-services\/windows\/editing-features-with-z-values-in-feature-services.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">default Z\u2011value set<\/a>, that value <em>usually<\/em> gets applied to new features.<\/li>\n<li>If no default value is set, the Z-value defaults to zero.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Overwriting default values<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Tooltips<\/strong>: Enable tooltips to set specific Z-values when creating or updating features. For a step-by-step guide, check out this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/arcgis-online\/mapping\/tighten-up-your-edits\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previous article<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Snap chip<\/strong>: Enable the snap chip to pick an existing feature and copy its Z-value.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Interpolation<\/strong>: When you update a feature that has vertices at different heights, the Z-value for new vertices is calculated when possible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now you can choose which tools to use, and when, in order to set the right height for your features.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Bottom Line<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>We&#8217;re always looking for ways to make web editing easier.
