Its reflective nature, lack of texture, and seasonal variability can introduce noise and artefacts if not handled correctly.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>In an earlier blog, we explored how to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/arcgis-pro\/3d-gis\/create-accurate-water-body-geometries-for-reality-mapping-with-arcgispro\">create water body geometries using traditional image classification workflows in ArcGIS Pro<\/a>. While that approach is still valid, recent advances in foundation models now make it possible to significantly simplify the process.<\/p>\n<p>In this post, I demonstrate a <strong>streamlined workflow using the SAM3 deep learning model<\/strong> and simple <strong>text prompts<\/strong> to automatically extract water bodies ready for use in Reality Mapping reconstruction workflows.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<h3>Why use SAM3 for water bodies?<\/h3>\n<div>\n<p>SAM3 (Segment Anything Model v3) enables object detection and segmentation using natural\u2011language prompts rather than manually defined training samples or class schemas. For Reality Mapping projects, this offers some clear advantages:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Fewer steps: <\/strong>no training data collection or classifier tuning<\/li>\n<li><strong>Consistent results:<\/strong> across rivers, lakes, and reservoirs<\/li>\n<li><strong>Scalable processing:<\/strong> for large project areas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For water extraction, prompts such as:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cwater, lake, river, dam, creek\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>are often sufficient to generate reliable results across a wide variety of environments.<\/p>\n<p>The SAM3 model and associated metadata are available directly from ArcGIS content, making it straightforward to integrate into existing workflows.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>You can find the SAM3 model <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=37ef2e1ba0c042ce99501f56295ec0d4\">HERE<\/a> on Esri&#8217;s Living Atlas.\u00a0 Thanks to Eagle Technology Group Ltd in New Zealand for this great submission!<\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<h3>Project context and data characteristics<\/h3>\n<div>\n<p>For this example, I applied the workflow to a <strong>Reality Mapping dataset covering approximately 50\u202fsquare kilometres in Stuttgart, Germany.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>This is the same dataset from the previous blog with data provided by GeoFly GmbH \u2013 Vexcel Osprey 4.1 \u2013 processed with ArcGIS Reality by Esri. To regularise the geometry and produce cleaner inputs for Reality Mapping, I applied a short post\u2011processing sequence.<\/p>\n<p>The following steps were used:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Apply a <strong>positive buffer<\/strong> of <strong>0.1\u202fm<\/strong> to the detected water body polygons<\/li>\n<li>Run <strong>Polygon to Raster<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Convert back using <strong>Raster to Polygon<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Apply <strong>Eliminate Polygon Part<\/strong> to remove small internal artefacts<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This sequence smooths tile seams and merges fragmented shapes into clean, contiguous water body geometries that are far more suitable for downstream use.<\/p>\n<p>From here, only <strong>minor manual cleanup<\/strong> was required. While processing time can be reduced by limiting the spatial extent, this approach fits well into a practical production model.<\/p>\n<p>In reality in your day to day job, this works really well if you start the process as you leave on Friday afternoon and return to your desk on Monday morning to review results and perform minor cleanup.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<h2>Using the results in Reality Mapping<\/h2>\n<div>\n<p>Once validated, the extracted water body polygons can be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Imported into your preferred Reality Mapping solution for your reconstruction<\/li>\n<li>Reused across multiple production runs for the same area<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At this stage, you can choose between <strong>precise<\/strong> or <strong>coarse<\/strong> water body workflows. While both are valid, I generally <strong>recommend coarse water bodies<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Less editing effort<\/li>\n<li>More tolerant of small shoreline or seasonal changes<\/li>\n<li>Often reusable across multiple projects<\/li>\n<li>Effectively handled during final reconstruction in Reality Studio<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<h2>Final thoughts<\/h2>\n<div>\n<p>By combining <strong>SAM3<\/strong>, <strong>text prompting<\/strong>, and <strong>Reality Mapping\u2011ready imagery<\/strong>, water body extraction becomes faster, simpler, and far more scalable without sacrificing output quality.<\/p>\n<p>Although some light cleanup is still required, this workflow removes much of the most time\u2011consuming and error\u2011prone work, particularly for large areas and complex river systems. As foundation models continue to mature, approaches like this are quickly becoming a standard component of modern Reality Mapping production
