Combining multiple datasets into one may sound simple, but sometimes the input and target dataset attribute fields are different. For example, one dataset may have more fields than the other, or fields have different names or types. Field mapping<\/a> can be as simple as matching fields between datasets, or more complex involving Actions<\/strong> to determine how multiple source fields get combined to a single target field. Actions<\/strong> can include statistical operations like finding the sum, mean, or max value, or text operations like concatenating or slicing field values.<\/p>\n

Note:<\/strong><\/span> In other tools (like Merge<\/a> and Spatial Join<\/a>), field mapping also includes changing other field properties like names, alias, field order, as well as adding and removing output fields.<\/p>\n

Field mapping with Append<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n

In the Append tool, you can activate the field map parameter by specifying Use the field map to reconcile field differences<\/code> as the Field Matching Type<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The field map automatically maps fields with the same name. The updated field map displays the target fields<\/em> and source fields<\/em> in two columns. Each source field<\/em> includes the name of the input dataset it came from in parentheses, which is especially useful when you have more than one input. Using the drop-down, you can map source fields<\/em> from the Input Datasets<\/strong> to target fields<\/em> from the Target Dataset<\/strong> directly on the tool dialog box.<\/p>\n

Steps: How to map attribute fields using Append<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Below are the attribute tables for a LocalRoads<\/code> and StateRoutes<\/code> dataset.<\/p>\n

    The StreetName<\/em> field has a warning because there\u2019s no matching field with the same name in the StateRoutes<\/code> dataset. To map source fields to the StreetName<\/em> field:<\/p>\n

    1. Click the first drop-down under the Source Fields<\/strong><\/li>\n
    2. Check the RoutePref<\/em>, RouteNum<\/em> and RouteSuffix<\/em> field boxes in the menu.<\/li>\n
    3. Set the Action<\/strong> to Concatenate<\/code>, and use a dash (\u2013) as the delimiter.
      \nThis step is necessary to combine multiple source fields into one target field. If the default action (First) is used, only the first listed field would get written to StreetName.<\/em><\/li>\n
    4. Click OK<\/strong> to add three source fields to the StreetName<\/em> target field.<\/li>\n
    5.       The Year<\/em> target field is already matched. So, why does it have a warning? <\/em><\/p>\n

      Hover the Year<\/em> field\u2019s warning: The field length is shorter than the source fields<\/code>. This message appears on text fields when the target field<\/em> length is shorter than the source field<\/em> length. In this example, the Year<\/em> target field length is 4 whereas the source field length is 10. Attempting to load values that do not fit into a target field can cause a big problem when running Append!<\/p>\n

      Follow the steps below to reconcile the field length difference:<\/p>\n

        \n
      1. Right-click the Year<\/em> source field > Click Edit text slicing<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
      2. In the Slice Text<\/strong> dialog box, specify the text position to start at 6 and end at 9, then click Add<\/strong>.
