The NASA\/<a href=\"https:\/\/www.isro.gov.in\/\">ISRO<\/a> (Indian Space Research Organisation) Synthetic Aperture Radar (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.earthdata.nasa.gov\/data\/platforms\/space-based-platforms\/nisar\">NISAR<\/a>) satellite is a complete game changer for surficial Earth observations such as <a href=\"https:\/\/storymaps.arcgis.com\/stories\/109e602e748346f3be8dc89124619828\">land movement<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/storymaps.arcgis.com\/stories\/7c674de4e9024a219249627500d2449b\">ice changes<\/a>, vegetation structure, soil moisture, and <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/nisar\/applications\/\">more<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earthdata.nasa.gov\/learn\/earth-observation-data-basics\/sar\">SAR sensors<\/a> can image the Earth\u2019s surface regardless of cloud cover and light conditions using the <a href=\"https:\/\/storymaps.arcgis.com\/stories\/20d8cd2ce11a4d5d81a8a65711d5ec29#ref-n-wijN3J\">microwave range of the electromagnetic spectrum<\/a>. These wavelengths can range from <a href=\"https:\/\/storymaps.arcgis.com\/stories\/20d8cd2ce11a4d5d81a8a65711d5ec29#ref-n-wijN3J\">K-band to P-band<\/a>. Click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earthdata.nasa.gov\/learn\/earth-observation-data-basics\/sar\">here<\/a> for the basics of SAR bands, frequencies, wavelengths, and applications.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.earthdata.nasa.gov\/data\/instruments\/sentinel-1-c-sar\">Sentinel-1 SAR<\/a> provides the first publicly available, global C-band dataset; its measurements capture the <strong>top layer of forest canopy<\/strong>. NISAR stands out because it provides the first publicly available global dataset captured with an L-band sensor. The L-band signal has a longer wavelength than C-band, allowing it to penetrate further through vegetation, capturing information from <strong>underneath the forest canopy<\/strong>. As such, NISAR provides insight into features that are hidden from view in optical or shorter-wavelength SAR imagery.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Data Acquisition<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Have you been waiting for NISAR\u2019s data release? So have we! A selection of pre-calibration\u00a0NISAR\u00a0Level-1 to Level-3 L-band products are available to download through the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/search.asf.alaska.edu\/#\/?dataset=NISAR&amp;prodConfig=PR&amp;resultsLoaded=true\">ASF\u00a0DAAC<\/a>. Fully calibrated L-band data is expected to be available globally starting in <a href=\"https:\/\/nisar-docs.asf.alaska.edu\/availability-overview\/#timeline-calibrated-forward-processing\">July 2026<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bring NISAR Data into ArcGIS Pro<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>ArcGIS Pro has supported working with NISAR HDF5 files as <a href=\"https:\/\/storymaps.arcgis.com\/stories\/c8f85d20b73c48fd8e89f8eef49bc60b#ref-n-4Bfbbu\">multidimensional raster datasets since version 3.4<\/a>. The May 2026 ArcGIS Pro 3.7 release provides additional support for <a href=\"https:\/\/nisar-docs.asf.alaska.edu\/gcov\/\">Geocoded Polarimetric Covariance (GCOV) <\/a>products as a <a href=\"https:\/\/doc.esri.com\/en\/arcgis-pro\/latest\/help\/analysis\/image-analyst\/sar-raster-types.html#6GB\">raster type<\/a>. This means you can skip processing steps that are listed in the SAR data processing tab in ArcGIS Pro that you\u2019d typically apply to other SAR datasets.
