Configuring an attachment element<\/h2>\n

To get started, grab a layer that has attachments enabled<\/strong><\/a> and open the Forms builder. You will now see a new Attachment <\/strong>section with three choices to choose from: General<\/strong>, Document<\/strong>, and Media<\/strong>. Not sure what option to choose? General attachment element<\/h4>\n

General<\/strong> attachment elements are a catch-all for any supported attachment file types. By default, all file types and input methods are accepted. The general attachment element can also include any pre-existing attachments associated with the feature (read on below <\/a>to learn more).<\/p>\n

Document attachment element<\/h4>\n

Document<\/strong> attachment elements exclusively allow uploading digital records such as text files, Word documents, or Excel tables. This is particularly useful if you only want to collect tabular or written information.<\/p>\n

Media attachment element<\/h4>\n

Display name & description<\/h4>\n

Customize what the editor will see on the form and add a helpful description.<\/p>\n

Keyword<\/h4>\n

Keywords are a data collection concept that automatically tag attachments with a string when submitted. For attachment elements, the keyword will default to the Display name<\/strong> and cannot be changed once your form is saved.<\/p>\n

Input types<\/h4>\n

As previously mentioned, each element accepts different types of attachments: audio, document, photo, or video. For General<\/strong> and Media<\/strong> elements, you can further restrict the input types to tailor it for your workflows.<\/p>\n

Minimum & maximum file counts<\/h4>\n

Optionally, set a minimum and maximum number of attachments per feature.<\/p>\n

Maximum attachment size \/ length<\/h4>\n

Allow file rename<\/h4>\n

When disabled, the editor cannot change the file name of the attachment.<\/p>\n

Display file name<\/h4>\n

When disabled, the file name is hidden on the list overview. The file name will still be visible in the detailed view of the attachment.<\/p>\n

Keep existing file name on upload<\/h4>\n

You can now author Arcade expressions to automatically generate a file name for attachments. When “keep existing file name on upload” is unchecked, the arcade expression will run on uploaded attachments.<\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"

What about existing attachments?<\/h2>\n

You might be wondering how the new attachment elements impacts datasets with pre-exisiting attachments (prior to the June 2026 update). The General\u00a0<\/strong>element provides three options to handle existing attachment associations:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Do not associate existing attachments<\/li>\n
  2. Associate all existing attachments<\/li>\n
  3. Associate only attachments with no keyword<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    When you drag a new General <\/strong>element onto the form, the default behavior is to not<\/em> include existing attachments, and they will be hidden (assuming there is not a matching keyword) from the form.     Important considerations<\/h2>\n
      \n
    • If you choose to associate all existing attachments<\/strong> in your general attachment element, you will be unable to add additional attachment elements to your form.<\/li>\n
    • If your layer had pre-existing attachments and<\/em> a form authored, you will now see a \u201cdraft\u201d attachment element towards the top of the form. Saving the form will apply this draft attachment element, but it can be removed at any time.<\/li>\n
    • Removing all attachment elements from the form will prevent users from viewing or adding attachments to that layer.<\/li>\n
    • The capture method (taking photos, videos, or audio recordings with a device) is currently not supported on the web experience. If you have authored a media attachment element with Capture only<\/strong>, it will be disabled on the browser.<\/li>\n
    • Keyword matching is fully distinct from an element’s input type.
