By applying AI-powered Natural Language GIS (NLGIS) technology, you can now interact with your map using a chat interface. Instead of navigating menus or building filters, Data Explorer (beta) lets you ask questions and explore your map in a more conversational way, like tapping someone on the shoulder and asking for directions.<\/p>\n<p>Data Explorer (beta) leverages three\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/developers.arcgis.com\/javascript\/latest\/agentic-apps\/ai-introduction\/\">agents<\/a>\u00a0that work together to support different parts of the app experience:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/developers.arcgis.com\/javascript\/latest\/references\/ai-components\/components\/arcgis-assistant-data-exploration-agent\/\">data exploration agent<\/a>\u00a0answers questions about the data in the map, including feature attributes, statistics, and spatial relationships, and it can filter features to support exploration.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/developers.arcgis.com\/javascript\/latest\/references\/ai-components\/components\/arcgis-assistant-navigation-agent\/\">navigation agent<\/a>\u00a0helps users search for locations and move around the map.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/developers.arcgis.com\/javascript\/latest\/references\/ai-components\/components\/arcgis-assistant-help-agent\/\">help agent<\/a>\u00a0provides guidance about the map and explains how to use the app and its capabilities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>Note<\/em><\/strong><em>: Data Explorer (beta) is designed to answer questions about the data in the map and does not use external data sources or the user\u2019s location.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>To build a Data Explorer (beta) app, you\u2019ll need to do the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Have <a href=\"https:\/\/doc.arcgis.com\/en\/arcgis-online\/administer\/configure-assistants.htm\">AI enabled<\/a> by your administrator<\/li>\n<li>Ensure beta apps and capabilities are <a href=\"https:\/\/doc.arcgis.com\/en\/arcgis-online\/administer\/configure-security.htm#ESRI_SECTION2_CE007AFEA465444887036BD6D7038639\">not blocked<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Have a web map consuming at least one feature layer<\/li>\n<li>Ensure your feature layers have <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.arcgis.com\/javascript\/latest\/agentic-apps\/ai-webmap-setup\/#layer-metadata:~:text=most%20pertinent%20fields.-,Complete%20metadata,-Layers%20must%20have\">complete metadata<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li>Metadata should include field descriptions and field data types.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Generate embeddings on the web map\n<ul>\n<li>These embeddings can be generated during configuration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<h1>Prepare your data<\/h1>\n<p>Let\u2019s take a closer look at preparing your data to ensure the best experience of the app. You should start with feature layers, which are currently the only supported layer type for ArcGIS agents. Layers should have thorough metadata with meaningful names to help the agents understand their purpose. Fields should also have descriptive aliases and field descriptions to provide additional context about the data.<\/p>\n<p>Both requirements can be completed using the <a href=\"https:\/\/doc.arcgis.com\/en\/arcgis-online\/reference\/item-details-assistant.htm\">Item details assistant (beta),<\/a> which can generate field and layer descriptions for you, saving time. To launch the Instant Apps homepage and create a Data Explorer (beta) app directly from Map Viewer, click <strong>Create app<\/strong> <strong>&gt; Instant Apps <\/strong>on the <strong>Contents<\/strong> toolbar. For additional recommendations and best practices for creating web map that works well with AI components, see <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.arcgis.com\/javascript\/latest\/agentic-apps\/ai-webmap-setup\/#web-map-configuration\">Web map configuration<\/a> in the Esri Developer documentation.<\/p>\n<h1>Generate embeddings and configure the app<\/h1>\n<p>The Data Explorer (beta) template follows the same configuration patterns as other Instant Apps templates. You can enable a cover page and introduction panel, organize widgets with the position manager, and apply theming to match your other apps.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s unique in the Data Explorer (beta) configuration is the <strong>Data Explorer<\/strong> tab. Here you\u2019ll first see a message asking if embeddings have been generated on your map. Web map\u00a0embeddings\u00a0are vector representations of the layer titles and field metadata for all feature layers in the web map that allow the language learning model to understand what\u2019s in the map. Embeddings are essential for the functionality of the app. If you need to generate or regenerate embeddings, you can easily do so within the configuration. For more information on generating embeddings, see <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.arcgis.com\/javascript\/latest\/agentic-apps\/ai-webmap-setup\/\">Set up your web map for agentic applications<\/a> in the Esri Developer documentation.<\/p>\n<p>On the <strong>Data Explorer<\/strong> tab, you can also customize the chat experience by adding a header, description, welcome message, and sample questions to help users get started.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, upon launching a published app, a help panel is provided to guide app users on how to use the chat. For example, you might ask about patterns in the data:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Which areas have the most accidents?<\/li>\n<li>What time of day crashes are most common?<\/li>\n<li>How does accident severity vary across different road types?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can also dig into road conditions\u2014like showing accidents that occurred in poor weather, low light, or at junctions\u2014or compare quantities like vehicle counts and casualty counts.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re looking for something more specific, you can filter the map by asking for accidents that meet certain criteria, like those involving multiple vehicles or on weekends. In addition to exploring the data, you can also navigate the map by searching for a location or asking to zoom to areas with high activity. Alternatively, ask for help understanding what kinds of questions you can ask about navigating the app.<\/p>\n<p>Once you receive a chat response, you can view a log of how the request was handled, including which agent was used and what actions were taken.
