As ArcGIS Online users, you create some of the world’s most important maps. You share maps that provide evacuation routes, disease hotspots, migration patterns, voting locations, hazard identification, resource aid, and much more. It’s crucial that these maps perform well whether viewed by a small team or broadcasted to regional, national, or global audiences. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When map layers are configured to take advantage of caching and other recommended best practices, ArcGIS Online can serve content quickly and efficiently to large audiences. But how do you determine if your map isn\u2019t meeting best practices? The answer used to be to review ArcGIS Online documentation and investigate each layer\u2019s configuration. With the <\/span>June 2026\u00a0update\u00a0of ArcGIS Online<\/span><\/a> we introduced a tool in Map Viewer that consolidates recommended best practices for building scalable maps into a focused UI to streamline your QA process. With\u00a0<\/span>Review map<\/span><\/b><\/a>,\u00a0you can\u00a0spend more time answering questions\u00a0<\/span>with<\/span><\/i> GIS than asking questions <\/span>about<\/span><\/i>\u00a0GIS.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Access Review map<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h1>\n

Review\u00a0map\u00a0can be used\u00a0in Map Viewer\u00a0by map owners or organization administrators\u00a0while you\u00a0build your\u00a0map\u00a0or as a final QA step before sharing it with your intended audience.\u00a0At this time, Review map\u00a0examines\u00a0and provides recommendations for the hosted feature layer items in a map, but\u00a0support for\u00a0other\u00a0layer types\u00a0will be added in a future release.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tip: If you need a broader\u00a0team to review a web map, consider sharing it with a\u00a0<\/span><\/i>shared update group<\/span><\/i><\/a>. All members of the shared update group can\u00a0use\u00a0the tool, investigate layer configurations, and save any necessary changes.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Use Review map<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h1>\n

Review map\u00a0results<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

When you open\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Review<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0map<\/span><\/span><\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>you\u2019re<\/span>\u00a0presented with a list of layer configurations that can influence map performance and scalabil<\/span>ity.\u00a0<\/span>The list\u00a0<\/span>may\u00a0<\/span>highlight layers that do not follow best practices,\u00a0<\/span>or\u00a0<\/span>it<\/span>\u00a0may simply confirm\u00a0<\/span>that your<\/span>\u00a0map already aligns with best practices.\u00a0<\/span>The color-coded symbols<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>indicate<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the level of importance of each configuration recommendation as it relates to map scalability. There are\u00a0<\/span><\/span>five<\/span>\u00a0possible categories<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0for a configuration to fall under<\/span>, these include:<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"

            Apply recommendations<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

            Applying a recommendation is as simple as clicking the launch button beside a layer, and either changing the setting\u00a0<\/span>on<\/span>\u00a0the opened pane in Map Viewer or on the newly opened tab of the item\u00a0<\/span>page. If you do not have the privileges to manage a layer, clicking the launch button will open documentation about the configuration. From here<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0you have a couple of choices<\/span>:<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

              \n
            1. If the layer is owned by someone in your organization, you can reach out to them explaining the <\/span>Review map<\/span><\/b>\u00a0results and ask for the configuration to be changed.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
            2. \u00a0If the layer is owned by someone outside your organization, then\u00a0evaluate your tolerance for continuing to include the layer in your map.\u00a0Is there a difference in map responsiveness when the layer is removed?\u00a0Consider the importance of\u00a0the layer to the story of the map and your intended audience as well as the priority level of the recommendation.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

              Note: Recommendations relating to reprojection will link out to documentation, as projections cannot be modified directly in ArcGIS Online at this time. <\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"

              Advanced\u00a0review\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h1>\n

              The second tab in the tool is the\u00a0<\/span>Advanced\u00a0<\/span><\/b>r<\/span><\/b>eview<\/span><\/b>. Here, you can answer questions to generate updated recommendations that take your use case and data characteristics into consideration. For example, if your map is intended for public data collection and it\u00a0contains\u00a0a publicly editable layer,\u00a0we\u2019ll\u00a0deprioritize the\u00a0public editable layer\u00a0recommendation so you can focus on other areas of the map to review.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

              Advanced\u00a0<\/span><\/b>review<\/span><\/b> will also ask you about the frequency of data updates to your layer. In this context, “data updates” includes both editing and syncing field data, whether performed by users or automation such as python scripts. The frequency of data updates along with the maximum amount of time your users can wait before seeing those updates will influence your recommended cache age. Answering these questions will bring you back to the\u00a0<\/span>Review map<\/span><\/b> tab to see specific cache age recommendations for each layer you identified as<\/span>\u00a0frequently\u00a0updated<\/span><\/i>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

              If\u00a0you\u2019d\u00a0like to\u00a0modify\u00a0your answers, you can do so at any time.               Summary\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h1>\n

              The third and final tab within the tool is the\u00a0<\/span>Summary\u00a0<\/span><\/b>tab. Here, you can see characteristics about your map and individual hosted feature layers.\u00a0This information can be useful when troubleshooting performance, but it also serves as a convenient way to better understand the structure and composition of your map.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

              At a glance, you can see how many layers (including basemaps) and tables are in the map as well as the total features drawn on the map. For each hosted feature layer, you\u2019ll see its total number of features and the number of features that are currently on the map. If you\u2019ve set a filter, the total number of features will represent those that match your filter. These counts can differ particularly with large datasets, as not all features will be drawn at a given extent. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

              For polyline and polygon layers,\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0a report of\u00a0maximum\u00a0feature vertex counts.\u00a0This is\u00a0to\u00a0inform you of your most geometrically complex feature, which provides context\u00a0to the size of information that is being requested.\u00a0In the future, we plan to provide\u00a0additional\u00a0statistics and insights about maps and layers. Understanding the composition of a map is often just as valuable as receiving recommendations, and we want to continue surfacing information that helps authors better understand their content without needing to leave Map Viewer.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

              What\u2019s\u00a0next?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h1>\n

              Review Map<\/span><\/b>\u00a0is the first step in helping authors better understand the scalability characteristics of their maps directly within Map Viewer.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

              One area\u00a0we’re\u00a0particularly interested in expanding is reporting. For some organizations, it may be crucial to share results with colleagues and stakeholders before making updates.\u00a0We’re\u00a0exploring exportable reports that would make it easier to document and communicate\u00a0<\/span>Review\u00a0<\/span><\/b>m<\/span><\/b>ap<\/span><\/b>\u00a0findings.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

              We’re\u00a0also continuing to improve the recommendation engine itself:\u00a0we plan to make the checks more intelligent and\u00a0context aware. Not every map has the same goals, and recommendations should reflect that.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

              As with many ArcGIS Online\u00a0features, we expect\u00a0<\/span>Review\u00a0<\/span><\/b>m<\/span><\/b>ap<\/span><\/b>\u00a0to continue evolving over time.\u00a0This\u00a0initial\u00a0offering\u00a0provides a foundation that we can build on,\u00a0including\u00a0building\u00a0a similar experience for reviewing your public
