Esri’s Community Maps Program<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>adopts user data worldwide to improve and update our vector basemaps. One way users can contribute to Community Maps is with the Community Maps (CM) Editor app. Our Editor App gives users the option to create details such as sports fields, landscaping, buildings, points of interest, and more to enhance your basemap. As of today, editors<\/em> have improved thousands of basemap locations around the world. Who are the<\/strong> editors<\/strong> you might ask? Me, you, a student, a professor, a city or county GIS worker, a business… anyone can edit in the app. It is openly accessible as long as you have an ArcGIS Online account! <\/span>In the app, commonly enhanced areas of interest include university campuses, schools and parks, major league stadiums, and hospitals…<\/em>but what about an entire city? <\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The City of Round Rock, Texas<\/strong>, located just under 30-minutes from Austin, is an Editor App powerhouse. City IT employees, and interns, were early adopters of the application when it first went live in 2019, and continue to use the app today. With the app, Round Rock has added detail to hundreds of locations across their city, transforming their basemap into a rich resource that is used by departments city-wide.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Why Use the CM Editor?\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Keeping the basemap up to date with real-world changes is easy in the app. Editors\u00a0<\/em>improve their basemap at their own pace, with the option to use their community’s imagery<\/span>.<\/span> This<\/span> flexible<\/span> approach<\/span> creates<\/span> more<\/span> detailed<\/span> and<\/span> valuable<\/span> maps<\/span> without<\/span> requiring<\/span> a<\/span> city-wide<\/span> update.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Joanne Land Playground in Old Settler’s park is a great example of speedy updates. <\/span>When the park reopened<\/span> in<\/span> April<\/span> 2026<\/span> after<\/span> renovation,<\/span> Round<\/span> Rock<\/span> didn’t<\/span> have<\/span> to<\/span> wait<\/span> long<\/span> to<\/span> see<\/span> it<\/span> reflected<\/span> on<\/span> the<\/span> map.<\/span> Within<\/span> a<\/span> month,<\/span> the<\/span> playground<\/span> had<\/span> been<\/span> fully<\/span> digitized<\/span> in<\/span> the<\/span> Community<\/span> Maps<\/span> Editor<\/span> and<\/span> published<\/span> to<\/span> Esri’s<\/span> vector<\/span> basemaps. <\/span>Once<\/span> published,<\/span> the<\/span> enhanced<\/span> basemap<\/span> was<\/span> immediately<\/span> available<\/span> in<\/span> Round<\/span> Rock’s<\/span> Park<\/span> Amenity<\/span> <\/a>Explorer,<\/span> showcasing<\/span>\u00a0playground<\/span> areas,<\/span> walking<\/span> paths,<\/span> buildings,<\/span> and<\/span> landscaping.<\/span><\/p>\n
