My connection with GIS grew through academic paths, teaching, and professional experiences that made me realize how powerful GIS can be not only as a technical tool, but also as a way of thinking. I also had the opportunity to serve as a student assistant for the Esri Energy Resources Conference in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>These experiences strengthened my dream of joining Esri and learning more about the broader geospatial world. I wanted to explore how GIS tools are designed, how spatial analysis capabilities are developed, and how Esri supports users across so many different fields. When I received an interview email from Noman, it felt like a door was opening, allowing me to learn from the Spatial Analyst team, contribute to meaningful work, and experience Esri from the inside.<\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><strong>Intern experience <\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Every week, interns can participate in different events and programs, including Tech Tuesday, Wednesday talks, and Training Thursday sessions. They have broadened my understanding of how GIS connects with many emerging fields, from artificial intelligence and big data to 3D visualization and digital twins in real-world applications across the geospatial industry.<\/p>\n<p>In the GIS, big data, and AI sessions, I learned how powerful the GeoAnalytics Engine can be for performing spatial analysis on massive scale. I also gained a better understanding of how Esri is using generative AI and machine learning approaches to solve complex problems and support more intelligent geospatial workflows. Another inspiring topic was 3D GIS and digital twins. These sessions helped me understand why geolocation is a foundational pillar for digital twins and how 3D geospatial technology is transforming the way industries plan, build, and operate. Seeing how spatial data can represent the real world in dynamic, interactive, and decision-ready environments gave me a deeper appreciation for the future of GIS. Overall, I truly appreciated the abundance of learning opportunities during the internship.<\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><strong>User conference <\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I also had the opportunity to attend the Esri User Conference in San Diego while doing my internship. It was exciting to be surrounded by people from around the world who are using GIS to solve problems across many different fields. Whether the focus was nature conservation, emergency and disaster response, urban planning, infrastructure, or climate resilience, I saw how GIS creates new possibilities for understanding the relationships between natural processes and human systems.<\/p>\n<p>The conference helped me see GIS as a bridge between the anthropogenic and natural worlds. It transforms spatial knowledge into action by helping people discover better questions, reveal hidden patterns, and make more informed decisions. One theme from the conference especially stayed with me: we do not have to choose between thriving human communities and a thriving natural world.<\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><strong>My research project<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>My internship research project focused on using raster-based distance analysis to support transportation planning. Building on ArcGIS Spatial Analyst capabilities, I explored how cost surfaces, distance accumulation, optimal paths, and corridor analysis can help identify physical barriers and priority corridors for active transportation. The analysis produces optimal routes and least-cost corridors that can help planners understand where connectivity is limited and where infrastructure improvements may create the greatest benefit. Through weekly learning events, the User Conference, the hackathon, and my research project with the Spatial Analyst team, I gained a deeper understanding of how GIS technology is changing the world. More importantly, I learned how spatial analysis can turn complex data into practical insight for real-world decision-making. As I move forward, I hope to continue growing as a geospatial researcher, using GIS to connect people, places, and ideas, and to contribute to solutions that support both thriving communities and the
