{"id":346222,"date":"2018-10-29T12:00:24","date_gmt":"2018-10-29T19:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/?post_type=blog&#038;p=346222"},"modified":"2018-10-30T15:41:14","modified_gmt":"2018-10-30T22:41:14","slug":"high-fidelity-polar-elevation","status":"publish","type":"blog","link":"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/arcgis-living-atlas\/natural-resources\/high-fidelity-polar-elevation","title":{"rendered":"High Fidelity Polar Elevation"},"author":7071,"featured_media":0,"parent":0,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_searchwp_excluded":""},"categories":[22851,22931,22771],"tags":[255542,22951,255532,40161,255522],"industry":[],"product":[36581],"class_list":["post-346222","blog","type-blog","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-national-government","category-imagery","category-natural-resources","tag-antarctic-dem","tag-arcgis-content","tag-arctic-dem","tag-living-atlas-of-the-world","tag-polar-elevation","product-arcgis-living-atlas"],"acf":{"short_description":"Esri's Polar Elevation services incorporate the ArcticDEM and Antarctic REMA elevation products provided by the Polar Geospatial Center.","flexible_content":[{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<p>Earth&#8217;s poles have historically been some of the most poorly mapped regions on the planet.\u00a0 With heightened awareness, and an overall sense of urgency around global climate change, there is a need for high quality mapping data to facilitate a deeper understanding of the impact with regard to Earth&#8217;s polar regions.<\/p>\n<p>Sparked by President Obama&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.presidency.ucsb.edu\/documents\/executive-order-13689-enhancing-coordination-national-efforts-the-arctic\">2015 Executive Order<\/a>, and thanks to the University of Minnesota&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pgc.umn.edu\/\">Polar Geospatial Center (PGC)<\/a>, along with their partners and sponsors, we now have high resolution topographic models of the Arctic region and the entire continent of Antarctica.<\/p>\n<p>From monitoring and modeling the impacts of climate change over time, to field logistics, scientists, government officials, and the broader user community can leverage these great elevation maps and layers via the<a href=\"https:\/\/livingatlas.arcgis.com\/en\/browse\/#d=2&amp;q=arctic%20antarctic%20dem\"> ArcGIS Living Atlas of the World<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Arctic DEM<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pgc.umn.edu\/data\/arcticdem\/\">ArcticDEM<\/a> is a National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) and National Science Foundation (NSF) public-private initiative to automatically produce a high-resolution, high-quality Digital Surface Model (DSM) of the Arctic using optical stereo imagery from DigitalGlobe.<\/p>\n<p>Esri has been providing this data to users since 2016.\u00a0 However, we recently updated to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pgc.umn.edu\/news\/arcticdem-release-7\/\">ArcticDEM Release 7<\/a>, which includes 2-meter resolution elevation data for the entire region.\u00a0 All of our online Arctic DEM layers and maps can be accessed and used in ArcGIS Pro, ArcMap, and custom web apps.<\/p>\n<p>Want to see ice field and glacier <strong>changes over time<\/strong>?\u00a0 For a quick introduction to the different layers and functionality, check out the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/story.maps.arcgis.com\/apps\/Cascade\/index.html?appid=9818145e51e94d09b61ccd51ac0ab5b0\">Exploring Arctic Elevation user guide<\/a>.\u00a0 This story map will provide a quick overview of the different renderings and functionality, and even demonstrate how to analyze and measure ice changes over time.\u00a0 It is an eye opening experience, I encourage you to give it try.\u00a0 Also, since the Arctic DEM layers themselves are time enabled, change over time, and much more, can also be accomplished using ArcGIS Pro.<\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"image","image":{"ID":349112,"id":349112,"title":"ArcticDEMExplorer_TimeControl","filename":"ArcticDEMExplorer_TimeControl.png","filesize":572541,"url":"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ArcticDEMExplorer_TimeControl.png","link":"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/arcgis-living-atlas\/natural-resources\/high-fidelity-polar-elevation\/arcticdemexplorer_timecontrol","alt":"","author":"7071","description":"","caption":"Arctic DEM Explorer app showing Hillshade Grey and a profile from the Time Control.
