In this Story Map (Cascade Template<\/a>) we emphasize <\/span>the power of audio-visual <\/span>storytelling <\/span>through <\/span>25 sound recordings, 5 maps, and nearly 30 images. <\/span><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Sounds are used by wildlife to communicate with one another, avoid predators, and to find mates.\u00a0Sounds also evoke a sense of place for locations\u2014like the bubbling of a mud pot in Yellowstone National Park or the rustle of the wind through the grasses of the prairie. <\/span><\/div>\n

One of the greatest design challenges for the project was how best to feature audio in the Story Map. We started by looking at how we could improve the user experience from our previous stories like these: Embattled Borderlands<\/a>, Endangered Languages<\/a>, Twelve Places of Christmas<\/a>. We also drew\u00a0inspiration from others like the New York Times<\/a>, Washington Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n

One decision we made early on was to allow users<\/span> to<\/span> opt into audio instead of forcing them to play automatically. This way<\/span>,<\/span> users know that the story is going to feature audio and won’t be surprised or frustrated when it starts to play. Another feature we wanted to prototype was <\/span>using autoplay audio within a Cascade<\/span> immersive section. Th<\/span>is way, users can hear a unique sound with beautiful imagery at their own pace.<\/span><\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"

Why not use video? <\/i><\/span>Videos are extremely effective for storytelling but also control what the viewer sees and how long they see it. Moving images also distract from what th<\/span>is<\/span> story is all about\u2014<\/span>sounds<\/b><\/span>. For these reasons, we decided to prototyp<\/span>e<\/span> autoplay audio in immersive sections<\/span> with static images<\/span>.<\/span> To accomplish this we developed some minor customization to the Story Map. We used a third party javascript library called <\/span>Howler<\/a><\/span> to embed the audio into immersive sections of the Story Map. We relied on the built-in features of the Story Maps platform to embed all other audio for the story.
