{"id":392512,"date":"2018-12-27T14:34:29","date_gmt":"2018-12-27T22:34:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/?post_type=blog&#038;p=392512"},"modified":"2021-04-20T02:26:47","modified_gmt":"2021-04-20T09:26:47","slug":"living-atlas-highlights-in-2018","status":"publish","type":"blog","link":"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/national-government\/mapping\/living-atlas-highlights-in-2018","title":{"rendered":"Living Atlas Highlights in 2018"},"author":6281,"featured_media":0,"parent":0,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_searchwp_excluded":""},"categories":[22851,22941],"tags":[],"industry":[],"product":[36581,36551,36561,36601],"class_list":["post-392512","blog","type-blog","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-national-government","category-mapping","product-arcgis-living-atlas","product-arcgis-online","product-arcgis-pro","product-developers"],"acf":{"short_description":"This article reflects on some of the 2018 highlights for new additions and updates in the ArcGIS Living Atlas of the World.","flexible_content":[{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<p>Well, it\u2019s hard to believe 2018 is almost over.\u00a0 It has been a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/arcgis-online\/announcements\/2018-arcgis-online-year-in-review\/\">big year for ArcGIS Online<\/a>, and for the <strong>ArcGIS Living Atlas of the World<\/strong> as well.\u00a0 As the year comes to a close, we wanted to reflect on some of the Living Atlas highlights from 2018 that you may have missed.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the year, Esri released several dozen updates to our content in the Living Atlas.\u00a0 Below is a summary of our most significant additions and updates in 2018.\u00a0 If you can commit this list to memory (okay, at least vaguely recall and bookmark for future reference), you can impress your colleagues with your Living Atlas knowledge in the coming year.<\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<h2>Vector Basemaps<\/h2>\n<p>Perhaps our most active content in 2018 was with the Esri Vector Basemaps.\u00a0 There were 18 global updates of the Esri Vector Basemaps over the course of the year (about every 3 weeks), with several additions and enhancements included among them.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Localization<\/strong>: over the year, support was added for 12 languages (in addition to English).\u00a0 These include: Arabic, Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese (Brazilian), Russian, and Spanish.\u00a0 Users of ArcGIS Online with these language preferences can now access and use these localized versions of the vector basemaps in their basemap gallery.<\/li>\n<li><strong>New Styles<\/strong>: adding to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/group.html?id=30de8da907d240a0bccd5ad3ff25ef4a&amp;view=list&amp;start=1&amp;focus=maps#content\">several map styles<\/a> previously released, we introduced a couple new styles this year, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/arcgis-living-atlas\/announcements\/whats-new-in-esri-vector-basemaps-june-2018\/\">Charted Territory<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/arcgis-living-atlas\/announcements\/whats-new-in-esri-vector-basemaps-december-2018\/\">Oceans Basemap<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Style Editor<\/strong>: one of the most useful features of vector basemaps is that the map style can be customized.\u00a0 To make this easier, Esri introduced the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/apps\/mapping\/design-custom-basemaps-with-the-new-arcgis-vector-tile-style-editor\/\">ArcGIS Vector Tile Style Editor<\/a> app, which enables you to edit on of the Esri map styles to meet your specific needs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To take full advantage of these and other data updates, make sure you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/arcgis-living-atlas\/mapping\/whats-new-in-esri-vector-basemaps-december-2017\/\">update your maps to the latest version<\/a> of the Esri Vector basemaps.\u00a0 If you\u2019d like to publish these vector basemaps on your private network using your ArcGIS Enterprise software, they are also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/product\/announcements\/introducing-esri-vector-basemaps-for-the-data-appliance-for-arcgis\/\">now available in the Data Appliance for ArcGIS<\/a>.<\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<h2>OpenStreetMap Vector Basemap<\/h2>\n<p>In addition to the Esri Vector Basemaps, Esri <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/js-api-arcgis\/mapping\/new-osm-vector-basemap\/\">introduced a new OpenStreetMap Vector Basemap<\/a>.\u00a0 OpenStreetMap (OSM) is an open, collaborative project to build a free editable map of the world. The new vector basemap is built <strong>entirely using OSM data and cartography<\/strong> and, best of all, is <strong>provided freely<\/strong> for any ArcGIS user or web developer to include in their map or app!\u00a0 The OSM vector basemap is currently in beta release.<\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"image","image":{"ID":273522,"id":273522,"title":"OpenStreetMap Vector Imagery<\/h2>\n<p>Over the past five years, Esri has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/arcgis-living-atlas\/imagery\/whats-new-in-world-imagery-basemap-july-2017-through-june-2018\/\">updated the World Imagery map<\/a> with fresher or more detailed imagery for most of the world on multiple occasions.\u00a0 While the latest imagery is preferred for most use cases, the earlier imagery still has a lot of value for many users.\u00a0 In response to many requests, Esri <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/arcgis-living-atlas\/imagery\/wayback-81-flavors-of-world-imagery\/\">introduced Wayback Imagery<\/a> to provide access to <strong>earlier releases<\/strong> of the World Imagery map.\u00a0 More recently, Esri <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/arcgis-living-atlas\/imagery\/wayback-with-world-imagery-metadata\/\">updated Wayback Imagery to include metadata<\/a> and to end the beta release.\u00a0 You can use the <a href=\"https:\/\/livingatlas.arcgis.com\/wayback\/\">Wayback app<\/a> to create <strong>custom web maps<\/strong> using with your preferred version of imagery.<\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<h2>Sentinel Imagery<\/h2>\n<p>In addition to the imagery basemaps, the Living Atlas also provides access to multi-spectral, multi-temporal imagery (such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/group.html?id=a74dff13f1be4b2ba7264c3315c57077&amp;view=list&amp;start=1&amp;searchTerm=Landsat%208#content\">Landsat 8<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/group.html?id=a3fc50066aca4a939f8212af2b88cca6&amp;view=list&amp;start=1#content\">NAIP<\/a>) that enable you to get additional information from imagery beyond what can be seen by the naked eye.\u00a0 This year, that collection was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/arcgis-living-atlas\/imagery\/sentinel-2-more-than-meets-the-eye\/\">expanded to include Sentinel-2 imagery<\/a>.\u00a0 The Sentinel-2 imagery increases both the <strong>spatial resolution<\/strong> (ranging from 10-60 meters) and <strong>temporal resolution<\/strong> (revisiting places every 5-7 days) for the global image layers that are Maps<\/h2>\n<p>For several years, Esri has had an <a href=\"https:\/\/livingatlas.arcgis.com\/en\/participate\/\">active Community Maps Program<\/a> designed to enhance Esri map offerings in the Living Atlas with user contributed data.\u00a0 In 2018, Community Maps expanded to include <strong>more data<\/strong> and support <strong>more offerings<\/strong> than ever.\u00a0 While contributions to our basemaps and imagery maps have continued to grow, we have expanded the program to now also accept and integrate contributions for <a href=\"https:\/\/livingatlas.arcgis.com\/en\/participate\/#v=community&amp;subTab=what-to-contribute&amp;section=landelevation\">elevation data<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/arcgis-living-atlas\/data-management\/esris-community-maps-program-announces-community-addresses\/\">address data<\/a>.\u00a0 This data is now being used to enrich our <a href=\"https:\/\/mappingteam.maps.arcgis.com\/apps\/MapJournal\/index.html?appid=53b01c3337244f19a013adf88af97f0c\">collection of World Elevation services<\/a> as well as our World Geocoding Service.<\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<h2>Global Demographics<\/h2>\n<p>For the past five years, the Living Atlas has provided access to a rich set of global demographics with basic demographics for <strong>over 130 countries<\/strong> and advanced demographics for the United States, Canada, Germany, Japan, and other countries.\u00a0 As part of ArcGIS Online updates this year (i.e. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/bus-analyst\/analytics\/whats-new-in-esri-demographics-april-2018\/\">April<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/bus-analyst\/analytics\/whats-new-in-esri-demographics-june-2018\/\">June<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/bus-analyst\/analytics\/whats-new-in-esri-demographics-september-2018\/\">September<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/bus-analyst\/analytics\/whats-new-in-esri-demographics-december-2018\/\">December<\/a>), we published updates for more countries than ever, and introduced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/bus-analyst\/analytics\/whats-coming-in-the-2018-2023-u-s-demographic-updates\/\">new data for the United States<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/bus-analyst\/analytics\/whats-new-in-canada-demographics-september-2018\/\">Canada<\/a>.\u00a0 In addition, the team published a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/arcgis-living-atlas\/data-management\/2016-world-population-estimate-services-are-now-available\/\">new 2016 World Population Estimate<\/a> with updated data and other improvements.\u00a0 Most recently, the Living Atlas was updated to include a new set of feature layers containing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/arcgis-living-atlas\/announcements\/mapping-american-community-survey-acs-data-just-got-easier\/\">latest American Community Survey (ACS) five-year estimates<\/a> for the United Enhancements<\/h2>\n<p>With the growth of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/arcgis\/3d-gis\/overview\">3D mapping<\/a> and predictive modeling, elevation data has become an essential component of the ArcGIS platform.\u00a0 To support these types of use cases, new sources of detailed elevation data are being created.\u00a0 In the past year, Esri\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/mappingteam.maps.arcgis.com\/apps\/MapJournal\/index.html?appid=53b01c3337244f19a013adf88af97f0c\">collection of World Elevation services<\/a> have been enhanced with user data (as described above) as well as new commercial data.\u00a0 Most notably, the services were enhanced with more detailed global elevation data from <strong>Airbus Defence and Space<\/strong>, beginning with our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/arcgis-enterprise\/3d-gis\/airbus-worlddem4ortho-in-arcgis-living-atlas-of-the-world\/?rmedium=redirect&amp;rsource=blogs.esri.com\/esri\/arcgis\/2018\/01\/22\/airbus-worlddem4ortho-in-esri-world-elevation-services-and-tools\">elevation layers and tools<\/a> and later with our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/arcgis-earth\/3d-gis\/airbus-worlddem4ortho-in-esri-3d-elevation-services\/\">3D elevation services<\/a>.\u00a0 In addition, we published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/arcgis-living-atlas\/imagery\/high-fidelity-polar-elevation\/\">high resolution polar elevation data<\/a> for both the Arctic and Antarctic regions.<\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<h2>Live Feeds<\/h2>\n<p>One of key features of the Living Atlas is that it truly is \u201cliving\u201d \u2013 with new maps being added daily and some layers being updated as frequently as <strong>every few minutes<\/strong>.\u00a0 Nothing demonstrates this better than our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/arcgis-living-atlas\/real-time\/putting-the-live-in-living-atlas-of-the-world\/\">growing collection of Live Feeds<\/a>.\u00a0 These live feed services were particularly active this year because of the high level of hurricane activity and wildfire activity in the United States during this year\u2019s Atlas Websites<\/h2>\n<p>Over the past year, the <a href=\"https:\/\/livingatlas.arcgis.com\/\">Living Atlas website<\/a> was updated to improve the user experience for browsing and searching content.\u00a0 New <strong>content categories<\/strong> were introduced, such as Trending, to make it easier to discover relevant content.\u00a0 Improvements were also made to make it <strong>easier to contribute<\/strong> your work to the Living Atlas.\u00a0 Based largely on the work of our user community, the Living Atlas was recently identified as one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetizen.com\/features\/102056-top-planning-websites-2018\">Top Planning Websites \u2013 2018<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetizen.com\/\">Planetizen<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Content from the Living Atlas has also been used to fuel other, more focused websites that have been released recently.\u00a0 This
