For example, the phrase \u201ccurrent year ACS\u201d will help you find the layers. You can find these layers by searching <a href=\"https:\/\/livingatlas.arcgis.com\/en\/browse\/#d=2&amp;type=layers&amp;q=current%20year%20acs\">the Living Atlas website<\/a>, or directly within your map by browsing the Living Atlas in ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and others. Start by deciding if you want to show all three geographies, two, or just one. Remove any layers you aren\u2019t using so that the map isn&#8217;t cluttered with un-used layers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/arcgis-living-atlas\/mapping\/apply-filters-to-make-living-atlas-layers-work-for-you\/\">Go into the layer settings to filter the layer to your region or area of interest<\/a>. If you are showing counties, you can refine by state. You can use this interface, known as smart mapping, to easily explore different attributes within the layer. Smart mapping will offer you smart defaults based on the data from the layer.<\/p>\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Map a percentage. The Living Atlas ACS layers contain some data values represented as percentages in order to save you the time and hassle of calculating them on your own. Smart mapping will offer you default breakpoints based on the<\/li>\n<li>Compare similar topics by choosing multiple related attributes and selecting the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/apps\/Cascade\/index.html?appid=c61db1040dcd4df8a3dd7d1001fa408d\">predominance mapping style<\/a>. This shows a quick comparison of two numbers, and which one is larger. For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=5841f98da3ac428ea766919430b675a1\">this map of predominant education<\/a> shows which education level is most prominent in an area.<\/li>\n<li>See a pattern using both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/apps\/Cascade\/index.html?appid=cc8ed7ffcd5a4e329cdc552d6856abe4\">color and size<\/a> in your map. Choose an attribute that is a percentage and then choose the count (total) of that attribute. This will show you the distribution of a pattern and the count of where it is occurring. For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=bff958dc716f4aba8f34d842ba37e558\">this map<\/a> shows the percentage of employed teens using color, and the count of total employed teens using size.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/apps\/Cascade\/index.html?appid=3271f9b87c394c07b4a871257a5dc46b\">Use Arcade to construct custom attributes<\/a>. Add up multiple attributes, calculate an\u00a0index, and so much more. For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=33ee7f3c8c4a488bbd3bedb0930a8c76\">this map<\/a> uses arcade to calculate veterans into different age categories and then compares them using a predominance calculation. If you use this method, make sure to name your expression with a meaningful title, since the expression name will appear in your map legend.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If mapping all three geography levels, we recommend\u00a0starting with the tract level. This will contain the largest range of data. Then, copy the breakpoints into county and states, so that the colors in the map mean the same thing at every geography level. You&#8217;ll notice that the ACS layers have this configuration by default. We also recommend using meaningful breakpoints such as a national figure, or a goal that your city would like to reach. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/arcgis-online\/mapping\/better-breaks-define-your-maps-purpose\/\">This blog<\/a> provides some insight into setting\u00a0valuable breakpoints.<\/p>\n<p>In the GIF below, you&#8217;ll see that there are many other attributes that can be mapped from this ACS layer. Re-use portions of these pre-configured popups, or reset them and create your own unique popup using the attributes within the layers. Finish by choosing a beautiful and informative reference\u00a0basemap\u00a0such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/arcgis-online\/mapping\/introducing-a-human-geography-basemap\/\">the Human Geography Basemap<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Click Save at the top of the map to save your creation as a new web map. Web maps can easily be used within Story Maps, Applications, dashboards, and more.<\/p>\n<p>In this example, we want the pop-up to only provide information about the youth population (&lt;18), so we remove things that aren&#8217;t necessary.
