basemap and your map\u2019s subject matter.<\/p>\n<h1>First, Choose Your Desired Basemap<\/h1>\n<p>If you\u2019re mapping topics related to demographics or people, you generally don\u2019t want to use the default <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=30e5fe3149c34df1ba922e6f5bbf808f\">Topographic basemap<\/a>, as the colors and the shaded relief texture in that basemap can compete with the colors displaying your map\u2019s subject matter.\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=8b3d38c0819547faa83f7b7aca80bd76\">Light Gray Canvas<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=358ec1e175ea41c3bf5c68f0da11ae2b\">Dark Gray Canvas<\/a>, or even the Human Geography basemaps (both <a href=\"https:\/\/urbanobservatory.maps.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=3582b744bba84668b52a16b0b6942544\">light<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/urbanobservatory.maps.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=4f2e99ba65e34bb8af49733d9778fb8e\">dark<\/a> available), are more suitable in most cases.<\/p>\n<h1>High to Low Color Ramps<\/h1>\n<p>\u201cHigh to low\u201d is a style best for mapping a percentage or a rate.\u00a0 This is an easily-understandable style in which the bright colors depict higher percentages.\u00a0 Notice I said \u201cbright\u201d colors depict higher percentages, not \u201cdark\u201d colors.\u00a0 When using a dark basemap, we want that high contrast to show high values.<\/p>\n<p>For example, here\u2019s a purple high-to-low color ramp used in this map titled <a href=\"https:\/\/arcgis.com\/home\/webmap\/viewer.html?webmap=fc1ca5ff0e1e4e4b8269e47f9444ba31\">Where do People Live with Roommates?<\/a>, which uses a light basemap.\u00a0 The color ramp is as expected: darker purple means a higher percentage of adults living with a the lighter color depicts a higher percentage due to the increased contrast to the basemap.<\/p>\n<h1>Above and Below Color Ramps<\/h1>\n<p>The \u201cabove and below\u201d style is great when you want to provide an anchoring point.\u00a0 This anchoring point could be a goal, a national average, or some other meaningful value.\u00a0 By using two colors (one above this anchoring point, and another below), anyone viewing your map can immediately see which geographies are above the anchoring point and which ones are below, and minimizes the impact of extreme outliers on the overall visualization.\u00a0 Geographies with values close to the anchoring point should be deemphasized.\u00a0 A great way to do this is to give the anchoring value a color similar to the color of the basemap.\u00a0 If you\u2019re using a light basemap, the center of your above-and-below color ramp should be light.\u00a0 A great example is this map titled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=9c6f06e90d0b4d5cafdd2c0951f327e1\">Is a 40-Hour Work Week Map Color Ramps<\/h1>\n<p>If you\u2019re working with point data that has lots of coincident points, one option would be to do a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/arcgis-online\/mapping\/heat-mapping-in-two-simple-steps\/\">heat map<\/a>.\u00a0 Just as with the above-and-below and high-to-low styles, you want larger quantities to be shown by high contrast between the basemap and the hot spots in your heat map too.\u00a0 If you\u2019re using a light basemap, pick a color ramp that starts with a light color, and vice-versa if using a dark basemap.\u00a0 Let\u2019s look at using two similar heat map color ramps.\u00a0 Both ramps are purple to yellow, but one is designed for a light basemap and the other is designed for a dark meaning higher values is deeply entrenched in our minds.\u00a0 This technique of reversing the color ramp against a dark basemap works well for graduated symbols and proportional symbols, because the basemap is so visible.\u00a0 If you\u2019re doing a filled-polygon map, be careful.\u00a0 A reversed color ramp against a dark basemap can work if the basemap is still visible.\u00a0 If, however, you\u2019re zoomed in to a city or town, and not much of the basemap is showing, then use your best judgement.\u00a0 Step back and ask yourself, does the dark basemap work?\u00a0 Should I switch to a lighter basemap and avoid confusing my audience?\u00a0 Try both and see which version portrays your data more
