Underground utilities are also surveyed and marked. A Silver Lake crew member sets additional stakes based upon reading numbers and meticulous measurements from CAD diagrams using a clipboard and paper.\u00a0 Numerous tape measures are laid out to transcribe the dimensions of the foundation onto the ground.\u00a0 When the crew believes the tape measures are in the right place, they spray paint the edges of the diagram on the ground using the tape measures as guides.\u00a0 Once marked, the excavation team uses the paint lines to start digging. Because of the requirements of the type of home construction that Brett\u2019s teams support, he also specified that Brady would need to help him get within two-inch accuracy.<\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<h3><strong>Getting\u00a0Below\u00a02\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Brady has been working in GIS for 20 years and has been working with geospatial-related AR solutions for over 5 years, including founding Argis Solutions to build AR products such as the Argis Lens. The Lens product enables customers to project feature services in real time, such as those that can be created from imported CAD data, as an overlay onto the real world using an iPad on the job site.\u00a0\u00a0Brady knew that with his AR solution they could achieve sub two-inch accuracy if they could use markers around the construction site.<\/p>\n<p>After some discussion, Argis kicked off a project with Silver\u00a0Lake in which\u00a0Brady\u2019s team\u00a0introduced a modification to the Argis Lens solution to accommodate\u00a0the integration of\u00a0marker-based, high-precision location\u00a0with GIS content.\u00a0\u00a0For other applications,\u00a0the\u00a0Argis\u00a0Lens uses\u00a0onboard GPS in devices\u00a0or\u00a0paired GPS units\u00a0to achieve adequate accuracy.\u00a0 For this project, Brady really needed to help Brett\u2019s team\u00a0achieve their necessary accuracy,\u00a0and they could not\u00a0do so with only\u00a0GPS\u00a0on the devices their customers would be using.<\/p>\n<p>Brady\u2019s team worked with the Silver Lake Construction crew to affix complex images, photos of fruit, on stakes to mark known locations on the construction site.\u00a0 After some trial and error it was determined that larger images were required for staff who would be farther from a marker, such as an operator on a backhoe. They want the edges of the foundation marked because that&#8217;s what they have to work to.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>To bring together the construction and the GIS world in projects such as this, Argis takes CAD files, georeferences them, and then serves them out using ArcGIS Online or ArcGIS Enterprise.\u00a0\u00a0Argis has a patented framework that does the translation from ArcGIS to AR to project the GIS feature content into the \u2018real world\u2019 by combining the camera image on the device with the GIS content.<\/p>\n<p>For the Silver Lake project, Argis adapted their standard front-end GPS Lens app to create a workflow that enables the device to anchor to specific markers and then to use subsequent pictures to maintain alignment.\u00a0 The workflow is currently being used in the field with some final tweaks going into testing the optimal frequency and layout of marker images.<\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"image","image":{"ID":504012,"id":504012,"title":"SilverLake_IMG_0693","filename":"SilverLake_IMG_0693-e1556745889620.jpg","filesize":184592,"url":"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2019\/05\/SilverLake_IMG_0693-e1556745889620.jpg","link":"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/developers\/3d-gis\/augmented-reality-and-gis-working-together-to-build-your-home\/silverlake_img_0693","alt":"Image courtesy Argis Solutions and Silver Lake Construction.","author":"6531","description":"Field demo of ARCAD, the name of the Argis Solutions app used to project CAD data into the view on an iPad. He measures out the stakes and puts pictures on the stakes.\u00a0\u00a0He uses the pictures and stakes to measure out corners.\u00a0 Once the position is verified, the stakes stay in place and each team then follows with their own pictures, affixing them to stakes to guide their part of the process.<\/p>\n<p>After working with the Argis Lens solution, one of their field crew asked,\u00a0&#8220;Why didn&#8217;t we have this before?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For Brady, his goal has been to move the executive customers past the flash and sexiness of AR, getting them to realize that AR is practical, affordable, and able to provide the most valuable use to workers in the field.\u00a0 Based upon the feedback from the Silver Lake Construction crew, Brady feels that he met his goal.<\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"image","image":{"ID":503992,"id":503992,"title":"SilverLake_image1","filename":"SilverLake_image1.png","filesize":105020,"url":"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2019\/05\/SilverLake_image1.png","link":"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/developers\/3d-gis\/augmented-reality-and-gis-working-together-to-build-your-home\/silverlake_image1","alt":"On the left, foundation with spray paint.
