version of the Indexed 3D Scene Layer (I3S) specification for Scene Layers was released this week on the <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/Esri\/i3s-spec\">Esri GitHub<\/a>.\u00a0 I3S specification version 1.7 is supported by ArcGIS Pro 2.4 and ArcGIS Online.\u00a0 More support of I3S 1.7 across the ArcGIS platform will roll out in upcoming releases.<\/p>\n<p>In specification version 1.6, released March 2019, we reorganized the documentation to be by profile type.\u00a0 This allows us to upgrade each profile individually, so you can get the benefits of the updated versions without having to wait for all profiles to be ready.\u00a0 So, if you\u2019re an Integrated Mesh content creator, you don\u2019t have to wait for the Building Scene Layer to catch up to reap the benefits of 1.7!\u00a0 As of July 2019, specification version 1.7 supports <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.arcgis.com\/en\/pro-app\/help\/mapping\/layer-properties\/the-3d-objects-scene-layer-in-arcgis-pro.htm\">3D Objects<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.arcgis.com\/en\/pro-app\/help\/mapping\/layer-properties\/the-integrated-mesh-scene-layer-in-arcgis-pro.htm\">Integrated Mesh<\/a>\u00a0profiles.\u00a0 Specification version 1.7 does not have any breaking changes and is therefore backwards compatible with 1.6.\u00a0 More profiles will be upgraded to support version 1.7 in upcoming Tooling<\/h3>\n<p>First thing\u2019s first \u2013 we now provide a tool for upgrading existing Scene Layer Packages (SLPK) to specification version 1.7.\u00a0 This standalone executable is available on the Esri GitHub.\u00a0 It validates existing SLPK, upgrades to 1.7, can compress textures when upgrading, and more.\u00a0 Another great feature is the \u201c-i\u201d option, which that provides basic SLPK info.\u00a0 This allows you to determine your scene layer profile type and version without having to decompress the package.\u00a0 Check out the converter on <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/Esri\/i3s-spec\/blob\/master\/i3s_converter\/i3s_converter_ReadMe.md\">GitHub<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>Now for the details.<\/p>\n<h3>Node Paging<\/h3>\n<p>The first major improvement is node paging. Previously, clients received one node per request.\u00a0 Because of this, to load the full layer, clients had to request all the nodes.\u00a0 Now, the nodes are grouped into pages. Clients can determine which node pages they need, and request only the necessary pages. This significantly reduces server-client traffic and improves performance.\u00a0 For more details, check out the node paging section in the <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/Esri\/i3s-spec\/blob\/master\/format\/Indexed%203d%20Scene%20Layer%20Format%20Specification.md#node-paging-and-the-node-page-index\">specification format document<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Because of the addition of node pages, the <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/Esri\/i3s-spec\/blob\/master\/docs\/1.7\/sharedResource.cmn.md\">shared resources<\/a>\u00a0have been deprecated.\u00a0 The texture and material information are available in the layer file.\u00a0\u00a0 However, since 1.7 is backwards compatible with 1.6, the shared resources are still included in the specification, even though they aren\u2019t used for 1.7 components.<\/p>\n<h3>Geometry Compression<\/h3>\n<p>The next great update is support for Draco geometry compression. Draco is an open source library for compressing <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/google\/draco\">3D geometries<\/a>.\u00a0 This allows us to create compact nodes, which in turn provides a smaller payload, increasing performance even more!<\/p>\n<h3>Advanced Materials<\/h3>\n<p>Another great addition is support for advanced materials.\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/devtopia.esri.com\/ArcGISPro\/i3s-spec\/blob\/master\/docs\/1.7\/materialDefinitions.cmn.md\">material definition<\/a> is now feature compatible with <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/KhronosGroup\/glTF\/tree\/master\/specification\/2.0#materials\">glTF materials<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Expanded Documentation<\/h3>\n<p>A side note: the most recent update to the specification includes 1.7, and expanded notes and details for specification version 1.6 and 2.0. One section I want to highlight are the API overview in the ReadMe for each profile.
