While studying geology and chemistry at Oberlin College, I spent a lot of time drawing cartoons. My interest in art and science got me involved with a science magazine on campus and from there, I decided to pursue a career in science illustration. After college, I earned a Certificate of Science Illustration from the California State University, Monterey Bay. During the summer of 2019, I interned with ESRI on the ArcGIS Maps for Creative Cloud \u00a9 team as a science illustrator, using creative maps to tell interesting stories.","sameAs":["https:\/\/www.elabarts.com\/","https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/elena-hartley-21a785105?trk=people-guest_profile-result-card_result-card_full-click"],"url":"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/author\/ehartley"}]}},"text_date":"August 16, 2019","author_name":"Elena Hartley","author_page":"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/author\/ehartley","custom_image":"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2019\/08\/wide_no-small.jpg","primary_product":"ArcGIS Maps for Adobe Creative Cloud","tag_data":[{"term_id":448122,"name":"cartoon maps","slug":"cartoon-maps","term_group":0,"term_taxonomy_id":448122,"taxonomy":"post_tag","description":"","parent":0,"count":1,"filter":"raw"},{"term_id":439922,"name":"guides","slug":"guides","term_group":0,"term_taxonomy_id":439922,"taxonomy":"post_tag","description":"","parent":0,"count":2,"filter":"raw"},{"term_id":30921,"name":"illustrator","slug":"illustrator","term_group":0,"term_taxonomy_id":30921,"taxonomy":"post_tag","description":"","parent":0,"count":25,"filter":"raw"},{"term_id":30601,"name":"Map Tips","slug":"map-tips","term_group":0,"term_taxonomy_id":30601,"taxonomy":"post_tag","description":"","parent":0,"count":2,"filter":"raw"},{"term_id":446792,"name":"supercontinents","slug":"supercontinents","term_group":0,"term_taxonomy_id":446792,"taxonomy":"post_tag","description":"","parent":0,"count":1,"filter":"raw"}],"category_data":[{"term_id":37151,"name":"Design and Planning","slug":"design-planning","term_group":0,"term_taxonomy_id":37151,"taxonomy":"category","description":"","parent":0,"count":114,"filter":"raw"},{"term_id":430042,"name":"Education","slug":"education","term_group":0,"term_taxonomy_id":430042,"taxonomy":"category","description":"","parent":0,"count":80,"filter":"raw"},{"term_id":22941,"name":"Mapping","slug":"mapping","term_group":0,"term_taxonomy_id":22941,"taxonomy":"category","description":"","parent":0,"count":2683,"filter":"raw"}],"product_data":[{"term_id":36741,"name":"ArcGIS Maps for Adobe Creative Cloud","slug":"maps-for-adobecc","term_group":0,"term_taxonomy_id":36741,"taxonomy":"product","description":"","parent":36591,"count":55,"filter":"raw"}],"primary_product_link":"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/?s=#&products=maps-for-adobecc","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/blog\/584642","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/blog"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/blog"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/9822"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=584642"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/blog\/584642\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=584642"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=584642"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=584642"},{"taxonomy":"industry","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/industry?post=584642"},{"taxonomy":"product","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/product?post=584642"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
