I love a good map, but sometimes my outlines seem a little too harsh. The sharp vertices of the outline\u00a0aren\u2019t always what I\u2019d like my map to look like. As a cartoonist, I know that varying line width often gives illustrations just a bit<\/em> more character. Setting smoothing and round edges doesn\u2019t always cut it for me, and varying the line width just takes too long for complicated outlines like maps. My other option is to trace my map, but tracing takes forever, too.<\/p>\n

To solve this problem, I came up with a workflow using a combination of ArcGIS Maps for Creative Cloud \u00a9, Adobe Illustrator \u00a9, and Adobe Photoshop \u00a9. Step 1: Downloading data from ArcGIS Online into Adobe Illustrator<\/h3>\n

To start, I first need to import data from ArcGIS Online into Adobe Illustrator. On ArcGIS Online, I put together this map using data from Charlie Frye\u2019s map. For my World Continents<\/strong> layer, I added a white fill and a black 0.25 stroke outline.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m going to export my Illustrator file to a Photoshop file by selecting File > Export >\u00a0Export As<\/strong>. I change my Format<\/strong> to Photoshop (PSD)<\/strong> and make sure Use Artboards<\/strong> is checked to be sure the full extent of my mapboard is imported. In the next window, I make sure my Resolution<\/strong> is High (300 PPI)<\/strong> and check Write Layers<\/strong>. Since I\u2019m going from vector to raster, I want to make sure my raster is high quality and not too pixelated. I also need to make sure Write Layers<\/strong> is checked so I can edit individual layers in Photoshop<\/strong>. Step 3: Placing the new raster layers into Adobe Illustrator<\/h3>\n

I\u2019ve got my Photoshop file ready. I want to place the file back into Illustrator and run Image Trace<\/strong> on it. I can\u2019t trace<\/strong> the whole file or else editing it will be more difficult. I need to trace one layer at a time, and now I\u2019ll show a way to accomplish that.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m going back to Illustrator<\/strong> to open a brand-new file. My artboard dimensions are 14 by 14 inches (this is arbitrary). Once aligned, in\u00a0Illustrator<\/strong>, I\u2019m going to select my placed file and copy<\/strong> it (Command+C or Control+C). Then, I create a new layer and Paste in Place<\/strong> my file (Command+Shift+V or Control+Shift+V). I repeat this five times. Why am I doing this? It\u2019s because I\u2019m going to use the same Photoshop image to make multiple layers, and it\u2019s important to keep layers aligned to each other. The easiest way to do that is to make copies of the file. Still confused? In the next step, we\u2019ll be applying Image Trace<\/strong> individually to each copy. Step 4: Tracing the map with Image Trace<\/h3>\n

Now that I have set up my Illustrator file to have multiple copies of my linked Photoshop file, I\u2019m ready to apply Image Trace<\/strong>. However, I don\u2019t want to apply it just yet, or else I’ll trace the whole earth. Editing that will be a mess. So, first, I\u2019m going to head back to Photoshop <\/strong>to import just one of my layers, not the whole world. I\u2019ll start with my World Continents<\/strong> layer. I turn the visibility off on all my layers except for World Continents<\/strong>. The result is a smooth outline of my continents. Note:<\/strong><\/em> What I\u2019ve created is not<\/em> actually an outline in Illustrator but a shape<\/em> that looks like an outline. As soon as I activate Image Trace<\/strong>, my image disappears. Image Trace<\/strong> defaults to Black and White<\/strong>. To change this, all I need to do is open the Image Trace Settings <\/strong>again. Once here, since my layer is in color, I change my Mode<\/strong> to Color<\/strong>. Since my layer is only one color, I set my number of Colors<\/strong> to 2 <\/strong>to help with processing. I also select Ignore White<\/strong>. Finishing up<\/h3>\n

To touch up my map, I used the Eraser<\/strong> and Blob Brush<\/strong> tools to patch up my layers in a few places.<\/p>\n

I drew simple outlines of Laurasia and Gondwanaland (PDF vector available for download here<\/a>) for my mini map of ancient Earth which also acts as my legend.<\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"sidebar","content":"

Map Tips:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Colorwise, I wanted my colors to be kid-friendly but also accessible to those with color blindness. I gave the outline a dark blue.<\/p>\n

I added a gradient to my ocean layer.<\/p>\n

I changed the size of my artboard to better crop my map.<\/p>\n

I used four different fonts in this map and all are available on Adobe Fonts:<\/p>\n
