{"id":597112,"date":"2019-08-29T12:22:40","date_gmt":"2019-08-29T19:22:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/?post_type=blog&#038;p=597112"},"modified":"2019-08-29T13:45:15","modified_gmt":"2019-08-29T20:45:15","slug":"landsat-services-update-for-living-atlas","status":"publish","type":"blog","link":"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/arcgis-living-atlas\/imagery\/landsat-services-update-for-living-atlas","title":{"rendered":"Landsat Update for Living Atlas"},"author":7071,"featured_media":0,"parent":0,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_searchwp_excluded":""},"categories":[22931],"tags":[],"industry":[],"product":[36581],"class_list":["post-597112","blog","type-blog","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-imagery","product-arcgis-living-atlas"],"acf":{"short_description":"With over 1-million scenes and counting, Esri's Landsat services provide a rich historic archive of our ever changing world.","flexible_content":[{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<p>Esri began providing free access to Landsat imagery through our online services <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/about\/newsroom\/arcnews\/understanding-our-world-with-landsat-data-and-arcgis\/?rmedium=arcnews&amp;rsource=https:\/\/www.esri.com\/esri-news\/arcnews\/summer13articles\/understanding-our-world-with-landsat-data-and-arcgis\">back in 2013<\/a>.\u00a0 With 1.1 million individual scenes, and new scenes added daily, our Landsat archive has grown to cover the Earth many times over.\u00a0 Our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=d9b466d6a9e647ce8d1dd5fe12eb434b\">Multispectral Landsat<\/a> layer provides both the historic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/land-resources\/nli\/landsat\/global-land-survey-gls?qt-science_support_page_related_con=0#qt-science_support_page_related_con\">GLS<\/a> epoch imagery and the full <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/land-resources\/nli\/landsat\/landsat-8?qt-science_support_page_related_con=0#qt-science_support_page_related_con\">Landsat 8<\/a> imagery archive.\u00a0 Looking for just Landsat 8 or perhaps polar projected scenes?\u00a0 We also offer additional layers including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=4ca13f0e4e29403fa68c46d188c4be73\">Landsat 8 Views<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=6334dd0f09f04a3583a37233540d73c0\">Landsat Arctic Views<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=c391d600102e48a6bbd82ffe28941bf5\">Landsat Antarctic Views<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In order to handle the ever expanding archive, and in response to user feedback, we recently made enhancements adding functionality and improving the overall user experience.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Thermal Bands<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Our Landsat services still include eight multispectral bands from the Operational Land Imager (OLI).\u00a0 However, we have now included two additional bands, TIRS1 and TIRS2, from the Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS), presented as Band 10 and Band 11 respectively.\u00a0 Users can directly access these two bands in their &#8220;raw&#8221; form.\u00a0 Alternatively, we have also included two new raster functions for on-the-fly conversion to surface temperature (offered in both \u00b0F and \u00b0C for each band).\u00a0 For more on the conversion, check out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/product\/analytics\/deriving-temperature-from-landsat-8-thermal-bands-tirs\/\">Deriving temperature from Landsat 8 thermal bands (TIRS)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Collection-1<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>All of the older Pre-Collection Level-1 data has been updated to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/media\/files\/landsat-collection-1-level-1-product-definition\">Collection 1<\/a> Level-1 data.\u00a0 &#8220;Landsat Collection 1 ensures all Landsat Level-1 products provide a consistent archive of known data quality to support time series analyses and data \u201cstacking\u201d, while controlling continuous improvement of the archive, and access to all data as they are acquired.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Performance and Stability<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Both server and database have been upgraded for improved performance and stability.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NOTE:\u00a0 While these upgrades are generally great news for our users, it is important to note that the ObjectID for each image in our archive has changed.\u00a0 This means that any existing reference to images by ObjectID (e.g. &#8220;Lock Raster&#8221;), will need to be refreshed in order to reference the correct image.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n"}],"authors":[{"ID":7071,"user_firstname":"Robert","user_lastname":"Waterman","nickname":"Robert Waterman","user_nicename":"robe9031","display_name":"Robert Waterman","user_email":"RWaterman@esri.com","user_url":"","user_registered":"2018-03-02 00:19:16","user_description":"Robert Waterman leads the ArcGIS Living Atlas Imagery Team at Esri.
