Thankfully, we live in a connected world with more people and devices connected every day.\u00a0 Believe it or not, there are times and places where connectivity remains difficult or even impossible due to geographic isolation, lack of infrastructure, or following a natural disaster.<\/p>\n<p>Should you find yourself in a situation where connectivity is unavailable, we\u2019ve got you covered with Pro! While ArcGIS Pro provides a modern web integrated GIS, this doesn\u2019t mean you have to be a slave to the wi-fi.\u00a0 Feature services enable you to edit anywhere connectivity exists; mobile geodatabases and sync capabilities extend this by providing a lightweight option for you to bring data offline for map production, analysis, and even editing, to provide capabilities for syncing of edits back into enterprise environments.<\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<h2>So. What exactly is a mobile geodatabase?<\/h2>\n<p>Haven\u2019t these been around for a while with SQLite? A syllogism to clarify \u2013 <em>All mobile geodatabases are SQLite databases, not all SQLite databases are mobile geodatabases.<\/em>\u00a0 Mobile geodatabases (<em>.geodatabase<\/em>) provide a feature service implementation of the geodatabase built on top of SQLite (<em>.sqlite<\/em>) with support for functionality such as offline use with feature services. Unlike SQLite, mobile geodatabases expose the geodatabase functionality required to work with simple data using domains, subtypes, and relationship classes. Capabilities also exist to take mobile geodatabases offline for editing and take advantage of functionality such as editor tracking and use of attachments.<\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<p><strong>Okay, so you\u2019ve been syncing data for offline editing with Collector and other Runtime apps for a while now. What\u2019s new here?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While I admit creating data for offline use has been around for a few releases, capabilities continue to grow.\u00a0 Recently, we saw the introduction of <a href=\"https:\/\/doc.arcgis.com\/en\/collector\/ipad\/help\/sync.htm\">map areas<\/a> within Collector for ArcGIS to enable field users with inconsistent connectivity to pre-plan their work and download data as well as base maps and tile packages for select areas using mobile geodatabases.\u00a0 While mobile apps and devices have reigned supreme in the offline territory for quite some time, there\u2019s been a new player on the scene flying under the radar until now:\u00a0 ArcGIS Pro.<\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<h2>Precision editing in the field with ArcGIS Pro<\/h2>\n<p>The option to take a <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.arcgis.com\/en\/pro-app\/help\/projects\/take-a-map-offline.htm\">map offline<\/a> for analysis and editing to get your work done without the need for a network connection has been available since ArcGIS Pro 2.1.<\/p>\n<p>You can take maps containing <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.arcgis.com\/rest\/services-reference\/sync-enabled-feature-services.htm\">sync enabled feature services <\/a>offline in ArcGIS Pro using the <strong>Download Map<\/strong> button found within the <strong>Offline<\/strong> group of the <strong>Map<\/strong> ribbon.\u00a0 This creates a local copy of your data in your project\u2019s home folder and swizzles the data sources in your map to reference this copy.<\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"image","image":{"ID":603452,"id":603452,"title":"Offline group within ArcGIS Pro","filename":"offlinegroup_Pro.png","filesize":3280,"url":"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2019\/09\/offlinegroup_Pro.png","link":"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/arcgis-pro\/data-management\/off-the-grid-arcgis-pro\/offlinegroup_pro","alt":"Offline group on the Map ribbon of ArcGIS Pro","author":"9712","description":"","caption":"Download Map is one of the options available within the Offline group to manage offline data within ArcGIS Pro. work offline<\/a> and you are ready for the road!\u00a0 You can now take advantage of the advanced editing capabilities of ArcGIS Pro from anywhere your legs can take you.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Check it out<\/h3>\n<p>If you are familiar with the concept of <a href=\"http:\/\/desktop.arcgis.com\/en\/arcmap\/latest\/manage-data\/geodatabases\/working-with-geodatabase-replication.htm\">geodatabase replication<\/a> and have used checkout replicas to edit from ArcGIS Desktop in a file geodatabase you\u2019ll find the experience to be similar, yet we\u2019ve improved upon this workflow in a few keys ways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>With a sync enabled feature service, creating a copy for offline editing is only a button click away<\/li>\n<li>Unlike checkout replicas where each replica enables only a single check-in, you can now sync edits as often as necessary, only creating a new copy when updates to the feature service made elsewhere need to be pulled down<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Homesteading sounding a little more attractive referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>"},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The same Runtime sync capabilities which enable offline editing when working with Collector for ArcGIS also power this process within ArcGIS Pro.\u00a0 Working with traditional, branch, and even nonversioned data, I can publish a feature service with sync capabilities and perform disconnected editing in Runtime apps, Collector, and ArcGIS Pro.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">A few things to consider when planning your offline editing workflows:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>All data must have GlobalIDs and can be either versioned or nonversioned with archiving enabled<\/li>\n<li>When working with branch versioned data, offline editing works with the Default version to create and sync edits<\/li>\n<li>Working with traditional versioned data, offline edits can be isolated by publishing from a named version specifically <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.arcgis.com\/en\/server\/latest\/publish-services\/windows\/offline-maps-and-versioned-data.htm\">created for this purpose<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Conflict management &#8211; Offline sync has no awareness of conflict management and follows the concept of a \u201clast in, wins\u201d model. As a result, offline scenarios with nonversioned and branch version data may require additional planning to prevent users from overwriting edits made by others.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Whether you\u2019ve been feeling shackled to your network connection or have been hesitant to \u201cGo Pro\u201d given dependence on current replication workflows; hopefully, you now have a better awareness of the options available with ArcGIS to go off the grid with offline editing.<\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><strong>A look ahead<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>We are excited about the continued expansion of the sync and offline editing capabilities available with mobile geodatabases.\u00a0 In upcoming near-term releases, we plan to enable undo\/redo capabilities when working with offline data in ArcGIS Pro, offer support for attribute rules and contingent values, and provide the ability to sync from named branch versions.\u00a0 The long-term roadmap contains items focused on enabling offline work with more advanced functionality such as relationship class rules and topologies, including support for taking utility network and parcel fabric datasets offline.<\/p>\n<p>What other items do you want to see in future releases?<\/p>\n"}],"authors":[{"ID":9712,"user_firstname":"Jonathan","user_lastname":"DeRose","nickname":"Jon DeRose","user_nicename":"jderose","display_name":"Jon DeRose","user_email":"JDeRose@esri.com","user_url":"","user_registered":"2019-07-01 11:23:28","user_description":"Jon is a product engineer on the Geodatabase team passionate about using technology to bring order to chaotic systems.
