Everything else in their education is hypothetical, but in their GIS class they work with real data from the real world. Her methods are diverse:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She starts the 6<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> graders out with concrete exercises, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/Exploring-Topography-with-Playdoh-4879598\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">modelling topography contours with Play-Doh<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Her 8<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> grade students this year are working on the Learn ArcGIS lesson <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/learn.arcgis.com\/en\/projects\/map-voter-data-to-plan-your-campaign\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Map Voter Data to Plan Your Campaign<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/training\/catalog\/57660f19bb54adb30c9454b0\/going-places-with-spatial-analysis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Going Places with Spatial Analysis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> MOOC.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students finish the course by creating their own maps. 6<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> graders must map something on their school campus, while 8<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> graders are given free rein to map anything they choose.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lauren also volunteers to teach other classes using<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/industries\/education\/schools\/geoinquiries-collections\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> GeoInquiries activities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The other teacher logs an hour of professional development time as they observe Lauren guiding their students through map-based learning. This introduces teachers to a powerful teaching tool without consuming more of their time.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lauren starts each class not with a description of what the students will do that day, but rather with a discussion on why they should care. At middle school age, kids are shifting into a &#8220;who cares?&#8221; attitude, but not necessarily because they don&#8217;t care. They just want some justification for why they should. Lauren&#8217;s GIS classes this year have focused on political participation, in particular redistricting and gerrymandering. The students are passionate about this issue and want to be able to do something about it. That they don&#8217;t need to be good at GIS. They don\u2019t need time to learn a new technology. GeoInquiries are easy for both students and teachers. If your students can follow instructions, they can do GIS. You can be their guide without being an expert.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And what does she want students to know? That it&#8217;s empowering to use real data in a real way. This year Lauren&#8217;s students participated in a mapathon for the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.missingmaps.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Missing Maps<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> program. As soon as they understood that they would be contributing to maps that would be used on the other side of the world by real people in humanitarian organizations, they couldn&#8217;t wait to get started.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"quote","author_name":"","author_profession_organization":"","image":false,"text":"I want teachers to know they don't have to be good at GIS to teach GIS. Next, she attended the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/about\/events\/uc\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Esri Users Conference<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, where she met like-minded educators who became a valuable peer group.
