Access all the Band Combinations Online"},"author":5951,"featured_media":0,"parent":0,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_searchwp_excluded":""},"categories":[23341,22851,22931,22941],"tags":[25891,26011,25041,25051,22901,23011,23391],"industry":[],"product":[36551],"class_list":["post-67571","blog","type-blog","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-analytics","category-national-government","category-imagery","category-mapping","tag-arcgis","tag-image-services","tag-landsat","tag-landsat-8","tag-national-government","tag-raster","tag-spatial-analytics","product-arcgis-online"],"acf":{"short_description":"One of the advantages to working at Esri is the access to so many people resources to help answer questions.\u00a0 The other day, I was writi...","flexible_content":[{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<p>One of the advantages to working at Esri is the access to so many people resources to help answer questions.\u00a0 The other day, I was writing a blog about the new Landsat 8 imagery available through ArcGIS Online. \u00a0I wanted to take a few screenshots, so I opened the map component in ArcGIS Online and did a search for Landsat layers.\u00a0 <!--more-->While this returned a lot of options, I became a bit discouraged because there were only three Landsat 8 layers returned\u2026Landsat 8 Views, Landsat 8 Panchromatic and Landsat 8 PanSharpened.<\/p>\n<p>You may be familiar with the older Landsat services in ArcGIS Online and you can see them in the graphic below.\u00a0 They are separated by years, and different common band combinations, like False Color, Vegetation Analysis, Land \/ Water Boundary, etc.\u00a0 I figured I must have done something wrong in my search, so I tried Landsat8 and Landsat 8, but still only three Esri created options were returned.\u00a0 I picked one, the Landsat 8 Views, so I could see what that provided me.\u00a0 Still no luck finding all the different bands, I decided to place a call to the Imagery product manager.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-49181 noIMGBackground\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2015\/05\/screenshot-landsat-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"495\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I explained my dilemma, I wanted to write a story about the different Landsat 8 band combinations, but I couldn\u2019t figure out how to access them.\u00a0 Simple, he said. \u00a0After you add the &#8216;Landsat 8 Views&#8217; layer to your map, click the \u2018drop down\u2019 arrow and select \u2018Image Display\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-49182 noIMGBackground\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2015\/05\/screenshot-landsat-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"285\" height=\"186\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sure enough, a new option I hadn\u2019t seen before &#8216;Imagery Display&#8217; appeared\u2026and two other options that I\u2019ve never explored\u2026&#8217;Image Display Order&#8217; and &#8216;Imagery Quality&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-49183 noIMGBackground alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2015\/05\/screenshot-landsat-3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"232\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I selected \u2018Image Display\u2019 and a new window appears with the option to select different bands to display (under the word \u2018Renderer\u2019).\u00a0 Selecting this drop down enables you to pick from multiple common band combinations, NDVI and Normalized Difference Moisture Index.\u00a0 The first option in the list is called \u2018User Defined Renderer\u2019.\u00a0 This option enables you to specify any Landsat 8 band combination you want and apply contrast enhancements to improve the image display.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-49184 noIMGBackground alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2015\/05\/screenshot-landsat-4.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"402\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Needless to say, I played with multiple band combinations to see how it affected what I saw in the Landsat imagery on my map.<\/p>\n<p>Now you may thing this next paragraph is a little Esri marketing, but I have to share what I thought was the coolest thing with this.\u00a0 If you follow Esri marketing for our imagery products, you\u2019ve heard Esri say over and over that we have on the fly processing of imagery.\u00a0 What does that really mean?\u00a0 Well, we use ArcGIS imagery technology to serve the imagery layers in ArcGIS Online, including Landsat.\u00a0 The IT manager for the image services configured the \u2018on the fly\u2019 processing to share out all the different band combinations for new imagery as soon as it is available.\u00a0 They did this once, in the initial configuration for the Landsat data.\u00a0 After that, as soon as new Landsat 8 imagery is received (which happens daily), the administrator simply adds it to the existing repository of Landsat imagery, and instantly the newer imagery and all the band combinations are available to anyone who needs them. \u00a0Have you ever tried to manage massive quantities of data that is constantly updating and changing while you have stakeholders who want to use it immediately?\u00a0 If you have, then you already know why having these capabilities are essential!<\/p>\n<p>The \u2018Image Display\u2019, \u2018Image Display Order\u2019 and \u2018Image Quality\u2019 options are available for all imagery served through Esri as an image service, which includes Landsat, NAIP, Elevation data, MDA NaturalVue and MDA BaseVue products.\u00a0\u00a0 I don\u2019t think we meant to keep this a secret, so I hope you discovered these options prior to my post, but if not, try them out!<\/p>\n<p>Here is a link to another blog post which lists common\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.esri.com\/esri\/arcgis\/2013\/07\/24\/band-combinations-for-landsat-8\/\">Landsat 8 band combinations<\/a>\u00a0you may want to try out, and what each band represents.<\/p>\n<p>Check out this <a href=\"https:\/\/instagram.com\/p\/2W4BFpDcyG\/\" target=\"_blank\">Landsat 8 image<\/a> on our Esrigram account using bands 7,6,5.<\/p>\n"}],"authors":[{"ID":5951,"user_firstname":"Renee","user_lastname":"Brandt","nickname":"iroeldjoeldj","user_nicename":"iroeldjoeldj","display_name":"Renee Brandt","user_email":"rbrandt@esri.com","user_url":"","user_registered":"2018-03-02 00:17:49","user_description":"","user_avatar":"<img alt='' src='https:\/\/secure.gravatar.com\/avatar\/bdee6ca5544d6893b5a6170db006624c0964c0d30d66f1ee1df2d06dc961a569?s=96&#038;d=blank&#038;r=g' srcset='https:\/\/secure.gravatar.com\/avatar\/bdee6ca5544d6893b5a6170db006624c0964c0d30d66f1ee1df2d06dc961a569?s=192&#038;d=blank&#038;r=g 2x' class='avatar avatar-96 photo' height='96' width='96' loading='lazy' decoding='async'\/>"}]},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v25.9 (Yoast SEO v25.9) - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Want Landsat?
