Viewcation.\u00a0 With the availability of high resolution imagery, fast computers and better performing internet networks this is possible for everyone.\u00a0 In fact, today\u2019s imagery is so sharp and clear, that I\u2019ll typically pull up the imagery for places I\u2019m going to visit to get the lay of the land before visiting.<\/p>\n<p>One place that really struck me as unique from the air was Barcelona, Spain.\u00a0 I took a real vacation there last year.\u00a0 If you get the chance to visit, try out one of the bus tours that take you around the city.\u00a0\u00a0 It is a great way to see a lot of sites, without trying to figure out the driving, plus you\u2019ll see things that interest you and weren\u2019t even on your list of sites to visit.\u00a0 Last year when I visited Spain, we did just that, and took the two day city tour, so we could hop on and off.\u00a0 During the tour, the guide repeatedly mentioned how the old town was a mishmash of buildings and streets going in every direction without a plan, yet the newer part of town was laid out concisely using a square \/ rectangular \/ linear pattern.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve ever walked around the old town, you probably remember the little alleyways, hidden courtyards, intimate restaurants, and older architecture.\u00a0 Wandering aimlessly while on vacation is actually one of the things I love to do, and you can do that for days in old town.\u00a0 So I was intrigued with the tour operators\u2019 comment.\u00a0 Could I actually see the difference between old town and new town using imagery?\u00a0 When I returned to my hotel room that night, I pulled up ArcGIS Online to look at the imagery for Barcelona, and what a surprise.\u00a0 I\u2019ve never seen such a clear distinction in old \/ new areas than in Barcelona.\u00a0 Take a look!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_49354\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-49354\" style=\"width: 1047px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2015\/05\/screenshot-spain-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-49354 noIMGBackground \" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2015\/05\/screenshot-spain-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1047\" height=\"540\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-49354\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Barcelona Spain with both the older and newer parts of town visible.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Can you see the difference?\u00a0 In the older part of town, you can see the confusion of buildings and streets.\u00a0 You can also see the newer part of Barcelona and how uniform everything is.\u00a0 From ground level, you don\u2019t realize that the buildings are all designed exactly the same and that many of them have courtyards in the middle.\u00a0 Here is a zoomed in image so you can see more details.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_49355\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-49355\" style=\"width: 1046px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2015\/05\/screenshot-spain-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-49355 noIMGBackground \" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2015\/05\/screenshot-spain-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1046\" height=\"540\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-49355\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Intersection of old and new.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I was so fascinated with how the newer part of the city was conceptualized and designed, that I thought I\u2019d research it to see if there was any additional information available.\u00a0 After a few search attempts, I discovered that Spanish urban planner Ildefonso Cerd\u00e1 y Su\u00f1er<sup>1<\/sup> is credited as the driving force behind the design.\u00a0 You learn reading his short biography in Wikipedia that with his new design, he focused on more than just buildings\u2026he took into consideration sunlight, natural lighting, ventilation, traffic, sanitation and transportation, as well as the need for public and private gardens and green space.\u00a0 Here is a close up of some of the buildings constructed following his guidelines.\u00a0 Up close, you can tell that the buildings aren\u2019t perfect rectangles, in fact, all corners are angled making them octagons.\u00a0 This was on purpose.\u00a0 The angled corners allowed the streets to broaden at every intersection making for greater visibility, and fluid traffic in all directions<sup>2<\/sup>.\u00a0 Such an innovative design, taking into account the way people want to live and move around.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_49356\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-49356\" style=\"width: 1478px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2015\/05\/screenshot-spain-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-49356 noIMGBackground \" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2015\/05\/screenshot-spain-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1478\" height=\"902\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-49356\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Newer part of town with courtyards, parks and octagon shaped buildings.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Well, that was funny.\u00a0 I started this blog to share my Barcelona Viewcation experience, and by the end I have two sources quoted and conducted a mini-research project.
