Quite often, a map will show hundreds or even thousands of points that overlap<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>This hides\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the very patterns that a map ought to reveal. In some cases, the points have different locations but overlap due to the scale of the map.\u00a0In other cases, the points are literally on top of one another<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>For example, <\/span><\/span>a database c<\/span><\/span>ont<\/span><\/span>a<\/span><\/span>ining a<\/span><\/span>\u00a0single address for an apartment building\u00a0<\/span><\/span>with<\/span><\/span> multiple units will experience stacked points.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This overlap is a real problem. While you may be able to get a sense of where things are concentrated, you cannot tell how concentrated they are. You need a smarter way to show points on a map.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The solution? Clustering.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

With the updated clustering capabilities in ArcGIS\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Online<\/span><\/span>\u2019s<\/span><\/span> Map Viewer, you can easily uncover hidden patterns in your data. It is a lot faster and can handle <\/span><\/span>significantly more<\/span><\/span> points compared to the 50,000 point limit in the Classic Map Viewer.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Let\u2019s see an example, using\u00a0<\/span><\/span>a\u00a0<\/span><\/span>layer of nearly 100,000 trees in Eugene, Oregon. This <\/span><\/span>layer<\/span><\/span><\/a> is created by the City of Eugene Parks and Open Space GIS. Let\u2019s t<\/span>oggle on the clustering<\/span> option for this layer. The map responds immediately. Clusters are proportionally sized by the count of features within each cluster. In other words, smaller symbols have fewer points within them, and larger symbols have many features within them. As you zoom in and out, the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>map<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>recalculates how many clusters are needed at each scale and map extent. The benefit is that as you zoom in and the points begin to separate, you start to see those individual points. As you zoom out, and the points begin to get closer together. A pop-up for every cluster<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Every interactive web map deserves a great pop-up.<\/span>\u00a0When you turn on clustering, it comes with its own pop-up.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In our\u00a0<\/span>trees\u00a0<\/span>example, the default pop-up reveals the number of features and the predominant or most common\u00a0<\/span>tree<\/span> type in each area. To gain greater insight into your dataset, try adding a filter or multiple filters.
