This has become in...","flexible_content":[{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<p>The process of aggregating and summarizing point data into equal sized connected hexagons is called hexagonal binning. This has become increasingly popular because creating thematic maps with hexagons is an effective way to visualize patterns and clusters in your data especially when a large number points overlapping each other. For more information on hexagonal binning, see our previous blog posts <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.esri.com\/esri\/esri-insider\/2015\/04\/08\/thematic-mapping-with-hexagons\/\">thematic mapping with hexagons<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.esri.com\/esri\/arcgis\/2012\/06\/08\/using-a-binning-technique-for-point-based-multiscale-web-maps\/\">using binning technique<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With the ArcGIS Online July 2015 update, ArcGIS Online spatial analysis tools now added build-in Living Atlas Analysis Layer gallery. The gallery contains a collection of common geography layers such as country, state, and census boundaries useful for many analyses. Also included in these ready-to-use layers are hexbins for different regions in the world with different resolutions.<\/p>\n<p>Here is an example of how to aggregate US tornado locations into hexagons in ArcGIS Online. The following web map shows approximately 19,000 points covering 15 years (From 1994 to 2008) of tornadoes in the USA.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2015\/08\/AllTornados.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-53691\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2015\/08\/AllTornados-300x181.jpg\" alt=\"Tornado Locations 1994-2008\" width=\"300\" height=\"181\" \/><\/a><!--[if gte mso 9]&gt;--><\/p>\n<p><!--[if gte mso 9]&gt;--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;line-height: 107%;font-family: 'Helvetica',sans-serif;color: #404040\">As you can see, it\u2019s hard to see where tornadoes mostly occur in the US because points are overlapping each other. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;line-height: 107%;font-family: 'Helvetica',sans-serif;color: #404040\">Now let\u2019s aggregate the tornado locations into 25km hexagons. To do so, select Analysis from the menu:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2015\/08\/analysis1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-53693\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2015\/08\/analysis1-300x46.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"46\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;line-height: 107%;font-family: 'Helvetica',sans-serif;color: #404040\">Then choose \u201cAggregate Points\u201d in Summarize Data category:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2015\/08\/AggregatePoints.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-53694\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2015\/08\/AggregatePoints-276x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"276\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/span><!--[if gte mso 9]&gt;--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><!--[if gte mso 9]&gt;--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;line-height: 107%;font-family: 'Helvetica',sans-serif;color: #404040\">The USATornados is the point layer that contains all the tornado locations. To choose layer containing aggregation areas, notice that you have the option to \u201cChoose Living Atlas Analysis Layer\u201d:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2015\/08\/livingatlas.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-53696\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2015\/08\/livingatlas-300x233.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"233\" \/><\/a><\/span><!--[if gte mso 9]&gt;--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><!--[if gte mso 9]&gt;--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;line-height: 107%;font-family: 'Helvetica',sans-serif;color: #404040\">From the Living Atlas Analysis Layer gallery, you can then choose \u201cHexbins\u201d category:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2015\/08\/chooselivingatlaslayers.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-53697\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2015\/08\/chooselivingatlaslayers-300x233.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"233\" \/><\/a><\/span><!--[if gte mso 9]&gt;--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><!--[if gte mso 9]&gt;--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;line-height: 107%;font-family: 'Helvetica',sans-serif;color: #404040\">You can see that there are different layers of hexbins available covering different regions and also with different resolutions. We choose \u201cNorth America Hexbins 25km\u201d for our purposes.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2015\/08\/hexbins.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-53698\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2015\/08\/hexbins-300x262.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"262\" \/><\/a><\/span><!--[if gte mso 9]&gt;--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><!--[if gte mso 9]&gt;--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;line-height: 107%;font-family: 'Helvetica',sans-serif;color: #404040\">Now make sure you uncheck the option \u201ckeep areas with no points\u201d therefore the results will not include hexagons that have no tornadoes in them.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2015\/08\/aggregatepointsoptions1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-53699\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2015\/08\/aggregatepointsoptions1-154x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"154\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-bottom: .0001pt;line-height: normal;vertical-align: baseline\"><span style=\"font-size: 10.0pt;font-family: 'Helvetica',sans-serif;color: #404040\">After the analysis is completed, the result layer is shown on the web map. Since all the hexagons are in equal areas, we changed the default symbology to a choropleth map based on the number of tornadoes fall within each hexagon. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2015\/08\/AllTornadosBined.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-53700\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2015\/08\/AllTornadosBined-300x180.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now the pattern of the tornadoes is much easier and to see it\u2019s also more visually appealing.<\/p>\n<p>Here is the same web map zoomed into south Florida area:<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2015\/08\/SouthFlorida1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-53702\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2015\/08\/SouthFlorida1-300x181.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"181\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With ArcGIS Online analysis tools, it is easier to aggregate points into hexagons because there are ready-to-use hexbins available for multiple regions in multiple scales in the new Living Atlas Analysis Layer gallery.
