This layer\u2019s data is from the 2010 epoch of the Eu...","flexible_content":[{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<p>Several weeks ago, we added the <a title=\"ArcGIS Online Content Item for the World Land Cover 2010 ESA layer\" href=\"http:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=7173340debc240a9b7ee5aec230e099c\" target=\"_blank\">World Land Cover 2010 ESA<\/a> layer to the <a title=\"The Living Atlas homepage\" href=\"http:\/\/doc.arcgis.com\/en\/living-atlas\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\">Living Atlas<\/a>. This layer\u2019s data is from the 2010 epoch of the <a title=\"ESA CCI LC Homepage\" href=\"http:\/\/www.esa-landcover-cci.org\/?q=node\/158\" target=\"_blank\">European Space Agency (ESA) Climate Change Initiative (CCI) Land Cover Project<\/a>. These data are raster format at 300-meter resolution and represent 36 land cover classes based on the United Nations Land Cover Classification System (LCCS).<!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_54531\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-54531\" style=\"width: 580px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2015\/09\/World-LandCover-ESA-2010.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-54531 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2015\/09\/World-LandCover-ESA-2010.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"331\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-54531\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Excerpt from World LandCover ESA 2010 showing the Pyrenees Mountains in the south, and Garonne Valley of France in the north.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Unlike many classified land cover datasets that use dominant condition classifications, this classification contains some mixed or mosaic classes. For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cMosaic herbaceous cover (&gt;50%) \/ Trees and shrub (&lt;50%)\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cMosaic cropland (&gt;50%) \/ natural vegetation (Tree, shrub, herbaceous cover) (&lt;50%)\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These classes show the most common and the second most common type of land cover within the cell. This makes it possible to extract specific land cover classes with geoprocessing tools that include a much better estimate of where that land cover occurs.<\/p>\n<p>This layer represents a considerable upgrade to the <a title=\"ArcGIS Online Content item page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=77864b7ae87a49e7984998e63d768c77\" target=\"_blank\">World Land Cover ESA 2009<\/a> layer. In particular, the compilation work for the ESA CCI Land Cover Project included working with regional and country-level experts from every continent to ensure classification accuracy was as high as possible.<\/p>\n<p>We also published a companion <a title=\"ArcGIS Online Content Item page\" href=\"http:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=d7e4452284a44d4383ae1994874cc615\" target=\"_blank\">World Land Cover ESA 2010 Quality<\/a> layer containing information about preprocessing, image count, and a confidence level for the corresponding land cover cell.<\/p>\n<p>The European Space Agency\u2019s Climate Change Initiative Land Cover Project team published the data for this layer in late 2014.
