The best way to access them in ArcGIS Online is through the Esri owned <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/group.html?id=30de8da907d240a0bccd5ad3ff25ef4a\" target=\"_blank\">Vector Basemaps group<\/a>, which contains the latest set of web maps and tile layers. See <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.esri.com\/esri\/arcgis\/2016\/12\/15\/whats-new-in-esri-vector-basemaps-december-2016\/\" target=\"_blank\">What\u2019s New in Esri Vector Basemaps (December 2016)<\/a> for information related to this update.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n<p>The information in this blog is updated and now references Beta 2 (B2) Esri vector tile layers released May 13, 2016.\u00a0\u00a0 <em><\/em><\/p>\n<p>As described in this <a title=\" Updates to Esri Vector Basemaps Released (Beta 2)\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.esri.com\/esri\/arcgis\/2016\/05\/13\/updates-to-esri-vector-basemaps-released-beta-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">post<\/a>, Esri has introduced\u00a0an updated set of vector basemaps (now a Beta 2 release). \u00a0These vector basemaps offer several benefits (e.g., fast to download, look great on high-res displays, smaller and easier to update, etc), but perhaps the greatest benefit is that users can customize the look and feel of the basemaps.<\/p>\n<p>Users who want to customize the Esri Vector Basemaps can do so by editing the style for one of the existing tile layers (e.g., Light Gray Canvas) and then publishing the updated style as a new tile layer. \u00a0Some of the options for customizing the Esri vector basemaps include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Turn layers on or off<\/li>\n<li>Change the colors and symbols used for a layer<\/li>\n<li>Change between language options available in selected areas<\/li>\n<li>Change the representation of disputed boundaries displayed in selected areas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Custom Map Style Example<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Below is an <a title=\"Custom &quot;Light Green Canvas&quot; Tile Layer\" href=\"http:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=bd505ce3efff479bb4e87b182f180159\" target=\"_blank\">example of a custom map<\/a>\u00a0that has been created from one of the\u00a0available <a title=\"Esri Vector Basemap Tile Layers\" href=\"http:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/group.html?id=30de8da907d240a0bccd5ad3ff25ef4a&amp;focus=layers\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Esri vector basemap tile layers<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>[iframe width=&#8221;100%&#8221; height=&#8221;400&#8243; frameborder=&#8221;0&#8243; scrolling=&#8221;no&#8221; marginheight=&#8221;0&#8243; marginwidth=&#8221;0&#8243; title=&#8221;Custom Canvas Map&#8221; src=&#8221;https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/apps\/Embed\/index.html?webmap=53cdb354fa7442b98bc6491495be420a&amp;extent=-129.1409,22.2022,-64.2337,52.998&amp;zoom=true&amp;scale=false&amp;disable_scroll=true&amp;theme=light&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>In this example, the <a title=\"Light Gray Canvas tile layer\" href=\"http:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=0e02e6f86d02455091796eaae811d9b5\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Light Gray Canvas tile layer<\/strong><\/a> was updated simply by changing the <a title=\"Color Hex Color Codes\" href=\"http:\/\/www.color-hex.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">hex colors<\/a> for a few layers in the map.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Background and water bodies: changed color from &#8216;#cfcfd4&#8217; to &#8216;#a6deff&#8217;<\/li>\n<li>Land and vegetation areas: changed color from &#8216;#ededed&#8217; to &#8216;#dfffd9&#8217;<\/li>\n<li>Urban area: changed color from &#8216;#e8e8e8&#8217; to &#8216;#d5e3ca&#8217;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Because these layers appear multiple times in the map style for different zoom levels, the changes were made with a batch find and replace to update all of the appropriate layers.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Create a Custom Map<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>How was this map created? \u00a0The steps to create a custom map are pretty simple, though the time and effort involved could vary significantly depending the level of customization desired. \u00a0To create a custom vector basemap, you can follow the steps below:<\/p>\n<h3><strong><em>Step 1: Create New Tile Layer Item that You Own<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Sign in<\/strong> to ArcGIS Online with your account and click\u00a0<strong>Map<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>To add vector tile layer, click the <strong>Add<\/strong> button, select <strong>Search for Layers<\/strong> in <strong>ArcGIS Online<\/strong>, type in &#8216;esri vector basemap&#8217;, and click <strong>Go<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Select one of the layers owned by &#8216;esri_vector&#8217; (such as &#8216;Light Gray Canvas&#8217;) and click <strong>Add<\/strong> and then\u00a0<strong>Done Adding Layers<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>In the table of contents, hover over the selected layer and click\u00a0<strong>More Options<\/strong>\u00a0(shown as &#8216;<span style=\"color: #3366ff\"><strong>&#8230;<\/strong><\/span>&#8216;) and select <strong>Copy\u00a0<\/strong>option.<\/li>\n<li>For the layer that you copied, click <strong>More Options<\/strong> and select <strong>Save Layer<\/strong> option. Update the info and click <strong>Create Item<\/strong> button.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><strong><em>Step 2: Update the Style for the New Tile Layer<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>For the layer that you created, click <strong>More Options<\/strong> and select <strong>Show Item Details<\/strong> option.<\/li>\n<li>To download the style, click the <strong>Open<\/strong> button and select <strong>Download style<\/strong> option. \u00a0If you&#8217;d like to preview the style, select the <strong>View style<\/strong> option first.<\/li>\n<li>Open the &#8216;root.json&#8217; style file that you downloaded in a JSON editor, make a few edits (such as described for example above), and then <strong>Save\u00a0<\/strong>the JSON file (if you like, you can rename the file, such as &#8216;mymap.json&#8217;).\n<ul>\n<li>While editing a JSON style file may be unfamiliar to some of us, it is a common workflow for many web designers and developers. The Esri vector basemaps are built using the <a title=\"Mapbox Vector Tile Spec\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/mapbox\/vector-tile-spec\" target=\"_blank\">Mapbox vector tile specification<\/a> (v8). \u00a0You can refer to the <a title=\"Mapbox GL Style Reference\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mapbox.com\/mapbox-gl-style-spec\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mapbox GL Style Reference<\/a>\u00a0for info on how to style the data in the tiles. \u00a0Additional info on layers in the Esri vector basemaps will be provided separately.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>To update your layer with this style, go to the item details page for your tile layer and click the <strong>Update<\/strong> button. Choose the file that you saved and click the <strong>Update Item<\/strong> button. You have now updated your map style!<\/li>\n<li>To see the changes, click the <strong>Open<\/strong> button and select <strong>Add layer to new map<\/strong> option. You can continue to make changes to the style file and update the tile layer item until you are done.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div>\n<h3><strong><em>Step 3: Create a Map with Your New Tile Layer<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<ol>\n<li>Once you are done updating style for the tile layer, you can update the tile layer item details (e.g. create a new thumbnail, edit the item description and other info).<\/li>\n<li>To create a new map with your tile layer,\u00a0click the\u00a0<strong>Open<\/strong>\u00a0button and select\u00a0<strong>Add layer to new map<\/strong>\u00a0option. \u00a0Navigate the map to an area of interest and click the <strong>Save<\/strong> button. \u00a0Enter the requested info and click the\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000\"><strong>Save Map\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>button.\n<ul>\n<li>If you would like to use your new tile layer as a basemap layer, you can do that also. \u00a0In the Map Viewer,\u00a0click the\u00a0<strong>Add<\/strong>\u00a0button, select\u00a0<strong>Search for Layers<\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0<strong>My Content<\/strong>, find your new tile layer, click on the <strong>title<\/strong> of the layer, and select <strong>Use as basemap<\/strong> option.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>After you save the map, you can update the web map item details (e.g. create a new thumbnail, edit the item description and other info) and then share or use the map as desired. \u00a0You can embed in an app or website as usual.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Did you already customize an Esri vector tile layer?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you customized a root.json style file copied from Esri&#8217;s first Beta vector tile layers, released November 2015, your maps will continue to work and display all your customization. However, we have released an updated Beta 2 (B2) version of the tile set, the underlying data, and the basemap styles.\u00a0 Because of changes in the updates, any customized layers built from the first Beta do not take advantage of any improvements. We recommended you update earlier Beta tile layers with the latest B2 vector tile layers.
