We use them for baby strollers, bikes and generally as a path of least resistance. Curb cuts were designed to make it easier for people who use wheelchairs to get around. Yet, everyone benefits from them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Making websites accessible is the same! Web content that is designed to allow people with disabilities to access it makes the web a better place for everyone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do you know if your audience needs accessible content? Well, you don\u2019t. But chances are you have at least some readers with a permanent disability, like blindness. And you probably have viewers who are temporarily disabled too, like someone who is recovering from eye surgery. YES! It can be required by law (depending on where you work), but even when it\u2019s not, it is the right thing to do.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Out-of-the-box accessibility<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/arcgis\/products\/arcgis-storymaps\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ArcGIS StoryMaps<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has many important accessibility functions built right in. It\u2019s been designed following <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/WCAG20\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common web standards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to support readers in each of these general areas of need:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those with limited mobility;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">those with impaired vision;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and those who are non-sighted.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Navigation for limited mobility<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For readers with mobility issues\u2014like someone who cannot use a mouse due to a repetitive stress injury\u2014the ability to navigate through a story\u2019s content by keyboard is baked in. They can then move the focus ring and cycle through all interactive elements on the page using the <\/span><b>Tab <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">key. And they can interact with a targeted element by pressing the <\/span><b>Return <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">key or <\/span><b>Spacebar <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">just like a mouse click. To scroll up and down, they can use the arrow keys.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Non-sighted readers who can\u2019t see a focus ring can still navigate with a keyboard and have the content communicated to them using third-party screen readers like VoiceOver, Jaws, or NVDA. But fear not, you have the power to do this without needing to know any fancy coding or technical skills. Here are some easy steps to make sure your content is available to everyone.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Create accessible themes<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using ArcGIS StoryMaps&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/arcgis-storymaps\/constituent-engagement\/tips-on-using-the-new-arcgis-storymaps-theme-builder\/\">theme builder<\/a>, you can design your own theme to match your organization\u2019s brand or the mood of your story. These themes will not automatically meet accessibility guidelines for font, color contrast and color choices, so you\u2019ll want to be very careful in your selections! Follow the suggestions in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/storymaps.arcgis.com\/stories\/02670c9018f14cfbbaef7cba5c54d453\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting started with accessible storytelling<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for guidance on designing accessible themes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Use meaningful headings<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new story builder has two options for adding structure to your texts: headings and subheadings. For sighted viewers, headings provide visual hierarchy and organization that improves legibility. For non-sighted and low-vision viewers, those headings are especially crucial for scanning the story and navigating from one section to the next. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think of headings in a story like the topics you block out in an outline of your content. (In fact, if you plan your content knowing you\u2019ll be using headings, it\u2019ll work better for everyone.) Use the headings in order\u2014heading first, then subheading\u2014even if you like the look of the subheading better. Common video delivery platforms like YouTube make it easy to add captions, or will even generate them for you (just be sure to edit those auto-generated captions). Then, go to the next level in making your videos accessible by adding transcripts and audio descriptions.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are using someone else\u2019s video, make sure it has captions available.
