But in developing nations, many of the world\u2019s major rivers remain un-gauged, despite the millions of people whose lives depend on them. The <a href=\"http:\/\/floodobservatory.colorado.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dartmouth Flood Observatory<\/a> hopes to help solve this problem with a concept they call \u201csatellite gauging sites,\u201d which makes it possible to monitor the flowrate of rivers using freely available satellite data,\u00a0without the need to build or maintain expensive infrastructure.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_70730\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70730\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2016\/12\/DFO.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-70730 noIMGBackground    \" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2016\/12\/DFO.gif\" alt=\"Adding new gagues to the map\" width=\"600\" height=\"328\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-70730\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Animation showing the added gauges<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>They key to this method is the microwave sensors carried aboard satellites like AMSR, TRMM, and GPM. As the amount of water on the landscape increases, emissions in the microwave spectrum decrease \u2013 a clear signal that <a href=\"http:\/\/floodobservatory.colorado.edu\/SatelliteGaugingSites\/technical.html\" target=\"_blank\">can be used to track flowrate<\/a>. Microwaves are unaffected by cloud, but absorbed by liquid water, which means that Flood Observatory scientists can monitor river conditions even when the ground is visibly obscured by weather.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_70740\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70740\" style=\"width: 234px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DFO_Popups.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-70740 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2016\/11\/DFO_Popups-234x300.png\" alt=\"Pop-up Window\" width=\"234\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-70740\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pop-up window showing data from a gauge<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The numerical estimates are much less accurate than ground-based gauging, of course, but still extremely valuable. As a relative estimate of how the flowrate is changing over time, they can be used to track droughts and floods, and to analyze long-term changes in the flow regime.<\/p>\n<p>In order to make them more easily available to the GIS community, Esri has added these satellite gauging sites to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/webmap\/viewer.html?webmap=f7011e6ca95249568114c0a81c7ffca9%27\" target=\"_blank\">Live Stream Gauge\u00a0map<\/a>.\u00a0When you click on one, it displays an estimate of today&#8217;s average flowrate, a description of the status (e.g. low flow, moderate flood, major flood), and a graph showing the time series. There is also a link to the station page, where you can get monthly and annual flow estimates, as well as some information about the calibration and accuracy of that particular site.<\/p>\n<p>This latest update also included new contributions from England&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/flood-warning-information.service.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Environment Agency<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/data.dnr.nebraska.gov\/RealTime\/\" target=\"_blank\">State of Nebraska<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/apps.wrd.state.or.us\/apps\/sw\/hydro_near_real_time\/\" target=\"_blank\">State of Oregon<\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/ifis.iowafloodcenter.org\/ifis\/\" target=\"_blank\">Iowa Flood Center<\/a> &#8211; over 3000 new gauges in total &#8211; so if you haven\u2019t checked it out in a while, now is a great time to take another look.
