Up until now, no\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">single<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0technology\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">could be<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0established as a standard, so multiple different methods are\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">competing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0on the market<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0today<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The technologies can be roughly categorized into\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">those based on\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">signals of opportunity,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">on pre-installed infrastructure and others. These technologies are usually\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">more cost-intensive than others, but also achieve better positioning results.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Bluetooth Low Energy Beacons<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0are small radio transmitters that are mounted on the inside walls of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0building. They are one-way communicators and send out\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">signal about their position\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to Bluetooth enabled devices in their proximity.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Their range varies depending on th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e type of Beacon and can be 1-150 meters (3.2 &#8211; 492ft).\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A Beacon is a relatively simple construct<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0with a compact design<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. It contains a lithium battery, CPU and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">radio<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">nd<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0fits into the palm of a hand<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0To allow a mobile phone to pick up a positioning signal from the Beacon,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">it must have<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0a location-enabled app installed.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0This could be any kind of app end<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">orsed by the building management<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, such as an airport app<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0at a specific airport<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, a hospital app,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0or shopping mall app<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0(to name just a few examples)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">f the mobile comes into range of a Beacon, it then picks up the signal and can compute its own position inside the building. That is because the infrastructure is usually already in place and you don\u2019t need\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to install\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">any additional hardware.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In terms of accuracy,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">WiFi<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ranges between 5-15 meters (16-49 ft), which\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is lower than\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the achievable accuracy using<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">BLE Beacons and VLC.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Depending on your use case, t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">his may not be\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">an impediment\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">though.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For insta<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ce, i<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">f you\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">just need to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">determine which room a specific asset\u00a0is located in,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">this level of accuracy may be enough. More precisely, a magnetometer detects the variations in the magnetic field.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Creating a fingerprint database of these, allows you to estimate indoor positions.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The more irregularities, the more unique a fingerprint will be, resulting in higher positioning accuracy.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The main advantages of existing-signal based indoor positioning technologies are the relatively wide\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">coverage and lower costs.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">However, ju<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">st like with\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Wi<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Fi<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, accuracy of the positioning results is relatively lower<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in this case<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0too. This\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is due to signal interferences that can be caused by\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">electronic devices and ferromagnetic materials in the indoor environment.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"none\">Visible Light Communication (VLC)<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:40,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A VLC system\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">uses the visible light spectrum to communicate\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and transmit information<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It consists of two main components,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">i<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.e.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">l<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ight emitting diode (LED) transmitters and photo diode\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(PD)\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">optical receivers<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">VLC can be integrated into the existing lighting infrastructure<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0inside the building.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Devices that are equipped with light sensors can receive the signals and turn them into location information.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">These\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">optical receivers<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0can be as simple as a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">mobile computer or\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">standard smartphone camera.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If a smartphone comes into vicinity of a transmitter it decodes the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">LED position and calculates its own position accordingly.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">While VLC systems can achieve positioning accuracy down to 30cm,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in order\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">o<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">r<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0it to work, the lights\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">have to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0be on and a clear line of sight between the lights and the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">senso<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">rs needs to be granted.<\/span><span
