style=\"font-family: Calibri\">Workbooks, Pages, and Cards<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">Before we get to all this great analytic capability, a few words up front to describe how Insights is organized to make analysis easy.\u00a0 Insights for ArcGIS enables you to analyze your spatial and non-spatial data together inside of <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">workbooks<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">.\u00a0 Workbooks are where you add the spatial and tabular data you want to explore on one or more <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">pages<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">.\u00a0 Dragging data from your workbook\u2019s table of contents onto a page will result in the creation of a <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">card<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">Cards are simply your data reflected as maps, charts, graphs, and tabular summaries.\u00a0 The cards you create on a workbook\u2019s pages reflect information from the numerous datasets, maps, charts, graphs, tables, and summaries present in all water utilities.\u00a0 Insights for ArcGIS is the newest and easiest way to bring all those data sources into one place to understand the patterns and trends that lie within.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Use the <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">Action Button<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\"> on map cards to access powerful spatial analysis tools or to ask your data questions such as \u201c<\/span><em><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">How are these datasets related?<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u201d or \u201c<\/span><em><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">How has this aspect changed over time?<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_79813\" The Action Button and its analysis options are accessed from the map card.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\">Answer Your Questions with Powerful Analysis<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">Taking advantage of the analytical capacities of Insights requires an adjustment in the way we think about using GIS.\u00a0 Instead of undertaking long and complicated analysis workflows, Insights allows you to simply access your data and start asking questions.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">How does the age of a housing development relate to the number of leaks?<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">Are there any outliers in my data that don\u2019t fit an observed pattern?<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">Are service centers located where they best meet the needs of our customers?\u00a0 <\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">Where should I focus my conservation efforts to realize maximum benefit? <\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">Where are my high-pressure laterals, and do they see more leaks?<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000\">Because it is so easy to just dive into your data and ask questions, you can quickly arrive at results that inspire the next round of questions that may need asking.\u00a0 For example, the question \u201c<\/span><em><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">How does the age of a housing development relate to the number of leaks?<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u201d is quickly answered by examining the relationship between service request and parcel data.\u00a0 Aggregating the number of service requests to each parcel and then graphing the number of requests by parcel age might show an expected pattern\u2014that older parcels generally receive more service requests.\u00a0 However, during your exploration you might also discover an outlier that does not fit the trend, such as the existence of one or two newer property developments with much higher than expected rates of service requests.\u00a0 That reveals the next question: <\/span><em><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">Why are these new properties reporting more service requests than developments that are far older?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_79814\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-79814\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/06\/ServiceRequestOutlier.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-79814\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/06\/ServiceRequestOutlier-1024x503.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"314\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-79814\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The chart on the right shows an abnormally high number of service requests for developments built in 2007. This outlier may have been difficult to spot with traditional analysis techniques.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\">Don\u2019t have a field you need to ask the next question?<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri\">Make it.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">The Action Button has more than just spatial analysis tools.\u00a0 There are also tools that help you generate new data to work on.\u00a0 For example, let\u2019s say you needed to find all the customers who use ten times or more water outside their homes than inside.\u00a0 Insights can help you figure out how outdoor and indoor water use are related by calculating a ratio on the fly.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_79820\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-79820\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/06\/NewField1_640.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-79820\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/06\/NewField1_640.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"186\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-79820\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The new field, outlined on the right, was created using the Add Field button and functions to create the desired expression. In this case, field \u2018T2\u2019 was divided by field \u2018T1\u2019 to compute a ratio of outdoor vs. indoor water use.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">You will find there are several string, numeric, and date functions available to help derive data on the fly, and keep your data exploration going in whatever direction it may lead you.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-caption-text\">Using the Action Button, to create a ratio of outdoor vs. indoor water consumption, made it possible to single out the customers who use ten times or more water outside their homes than inside (right).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;font-family: Calibri\">These various techniques and analyses are not new, but what is new is the speed and ease with which they can be accomplished.\u00a0 With only a few clicks and drags of the data, you can now perform powerful spatial analysis, joins, and aggregations that before would have taken multiple independent tools and steps to achieve.\u00a0 This is the real power of Insights for ArcGIS\u2014fast, powerful analysis on spatial and non-spatial data, answering your questions, and giving new
