In this blog, we will s...","flexible_content":[{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<p>Offering your web app in multiple languages can increase your audience and the overall impact of the information. In this blog, we will show two examples of configuring apps to support a bilingual audience.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example 1: Configuring two apps<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the first example, we will be using the Basic Viewer template to showcase a map.\u00a0 For this project, our audience is both French and English speakers.\u00a0 The map\u2019s pop-up is configured with a custom attribute display explaining the data.\u00a0 These steps start after your initial map and app have been created.<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 16px\">Identify data to translate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>First, let\u2019s start by identifying which data Esri translates as part of the localization process and what you will need to handle.\u00a0 Esri will display all application elements such as search, element labels, and tooltips in the browser or ArcGIS Organization locale.\u00a0 Green boxes show what Esri translates and red boxes highlight what is driven by web map content.\u00a0 In this example, the web map and data is in English and the browser locale was set to French.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/06\/TranslateOverview11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-80509\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/06\/TranslateOverview11-1024x532.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"332\" \/><\/a>2. Translate data and create the second map.<\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong>The pop-up, app title and layer titles need to be updated in the French version. \u00a0Create a second map and update all required data to fully translate your map and app into the language you need.\u00a0 Since I am using a custom attribute pop-up I needed to translate it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/06\/custom-attribute-display1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-80513\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/06\/custom-attribute-display1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"624\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>3. Configure the second application<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px\">Configure and publish your app.\u00a0 While configuring your app you will be able to change the title, subtitles and additional information to your language of choice. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Optional tips:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To enable users to easily choose the appropriate language I have added a splash screen to both apps.\u00a0 The splash contains a <a href=\"https:\/\/webapps.maps.arcgis.com\/apps\/View\/index.html?appid=ab6c37a4fbf04eac80662d031d5f86d1\" target=\"_blank\">link<\/a><span> to an application that has a web map configured in French.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/webapps.maps.arcgis.com\/apps\/View\/index.html?appid=ab6c37a4fbf04eac80662d031d5f86d1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-80512\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/06\/FrenchJPG.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"905\" height=\"468\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In addition to the splash screen, URL parameters can be set to force the locale to be in French. In the splash screen hyperlink a URL parameter can be added to the application URL to force the locale to be set.\u00a0 In this <a href=\"https:\/\/webapps.maps.arcgis.com\/apps\/View\/index.html?appid=a2b6141fe14b4f5c81df60264ebfef3e&amp;locale=fr\" target=\"_blank\">example<\/a>, \u201c&amp;locale=fr\u201d was added to the end of the French application.\u00a0 For more information on URL Parameters visit the <a href=\"http:\/\/doc.arcgis.com\/en\/arcgis-online\/reference\/use-url-parameters.htm\" target=\"_blank\">help topic<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px\">4. \u00a0Share your app<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Review and test your app in both languages.\u00a0 Verify everything is correctly translated. I generated the translations from Google Translate for this example. \u00a0You may want to have a fluent speaker verify your translations. Make any configuration or data adjustment. Then <a href=\"http:\/\/doc.arcgis.com\/en\/arcgis-online\/share-maps\/share-items.htm\">share your app<\/a> with your audience.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example 2: Configuring one app to support two languages<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This example will illustrate how to configure one app to support two languages.\u00a0 For this project, I want to collect data from the community.\u00a0 The community I\u2019m targeting contains both English and Spanish speakers.\u00a0 I\u2019d like to collect all the information in one application.\u00a0 This example will use the GeoForm template.<\/p>\n<p>1. \u00a0Configure data to support two languages<\/p>\n<p>In the GeoForm application, I have four fields I will use to collect data. One field contains a domain to drive the drop-down options in the GeoForm app.\u00a0 I created the domain values to appear in both Spanish and English.\u00a0 A bit of planning or updating may be necessary to update your data to contain both Spanish and English values. These domains were created and published from ArcGIS Pro.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Domains1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-80515\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Domains1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"963\" height=\"362\" \/><\/a>2. \u00a0Configure the application<\/p>\n<p>During the configuration process, you can assign a title and short instructions in both languages.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2018\/06\/GeoFormTItle.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-80523\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2018\/06\/GeoFormTItle.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"868\" height=\"506\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In most cases you should adjust the layer names in the web map, but the GeoForm allows you to change the field name labels in the builder.\u00a0 This is a simple way to add a second language to the field name.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2018\/06\/SelectFields.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-80524\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2018\/06\/SelectFields.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"870\" height=\"353\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>3. \u00a0Share your app<\/p>\n<p>Test your app in both languages to ensure everything thing which needs to be offered in two languages by the author is and the rest is localized. \u00a0An easy way to test is to use the URL parameter discussed earlier. Refine any details as needed. Then share your app. If you are going to provide links to this app from a website it would also be a good idea to utilize the locale parameter to ensure that the app UI is in the correct language for your target audience.\u00a0 Here is <a href=\"https:\/\/webapps.maps.arcgis.com\/apps\/GeoForm\/index.html?appid=ff5b6402039d449d85fcf7cf3877f659&amp;locale=en\">English<\/a> version of the GeoForm
