One of the many massive disruptions caused by COVID-19 is the widespread closure of schools. If your child is one of the many\u00a0<\/span>students\u00a0<\/span>facing\u00a0<\/span>multiple\u00a0<\/span>days at home<\/span>, and you\u2019re one of the many parents wondering how\u00a0<\/span>to keep them from spending the entire time in front of the\u00a0<\/span>TV<\/span>, here<\/span>\u00a0are<\/span>\u00a0some ways to\u00a0<\/span>keep them entertained in an educational way.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

First of all, let\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>talk about\u00a0<\/span>coronavirus.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Since appearing in Wuhan, China<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0in\u00a0<\/span>December<\/span>\u00a02019,\u00a0<\/span>COVID-19<\/span>\u00a0has\u00a0<\/span>become a public health emergency.\u00a0<\/span>Though\u00a0<\/span>this\u00a0<\/span>virus\u00a0<\/span>is part of a family of\u00a0<\/span>cor<\/span>o<\/span>na<\/span>viruses that causes a range of familiar diseases from the common cold to SARS, COVID<\/span>-19 is referred to as\u00a0<\/span>novel coronavirus<\/span>\u00a0because it is new to humans<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>(<\/span>W<\/span>orld Health\u00a0<\/span>Organization<\/span><\/a>).\u00a0<\/span>According to the CDC, the virus spreads through person-to-person contact<\/span>, though it can be prevented by frequent hand washing, covering the mouth and nose when sneezing, and avoiding close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness (<\/span>Centers for Disease<\/span>\u00a0C<\/span>ontrol<\/span><\/a>)<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s a lot to\u00a0<\/span>process, especially in the wake of non<\/span>stop news headlines about travel restrictions, event cancellations, and famous people falling ill.\u00a0<\/span>In addition to researching public health practices and guidelines, one of the tools you and your student can use to understand the disease is GIS.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Notice that most data is reported at a country level<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>T<\/span>his is usually done to protect the\u00a0<\/span>identit<\/span>ies<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>of patients. But it also points to a big question<\/span>\u2014<\/span>where are you in relation to reported cases?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Try using the\u00a0<\/span>following\u00a0<\/span>exercise<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to learn how to find your absolute location, your location within a regional boundary, and your location within a global boundary.<\/span>\u00a0Then, compare your\u00a0<\/span>location to the data provided about where there are outbreaks.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"

Another important fact we know about the virus is that it can be more severe for older people and those with pre-existing cond<\/span>itions<\/span>\u00a0(<\/span>Centers for Disease Control<\/span><\/a>)<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>To understand where there are large populations of\u00a0<\/span>seniors who\u00a0<\/span>need to be extra<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>vigilant in following CDC guidelines to prevent the spread of the illness, try<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>this lesso<\/span>n<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to map population by age. It is important to understand\u00a0<\/span>patterns of movement and who infected people may have\u00a0<\/span>come in contact with<\/span>\u00a0to monitor the spread of the virus.\u00a0<\/span>To see how this has been done for previous health\u00a0<\/span>emergencies, try\u00a0<\/span>this lesson<\/span><\/a>\u00a0on monitoring an E.
