These are point data representing center points within each county. I was asked the other day (a) how to bring this data into ArcGIS Pro to visualize them per county polygons and (b) how to keep it updated; and if necessary, do further analysis, reporting etc. using the vast capabilities we have in ArcGIS Pro. In response to that question, I decided to write this blog.<\/p>\n<p>At a high level, the process is pretty straight forward:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Add Johns Hopkins authored <a href=\"https:\/\/services1.arcgis.com\/0MSEUqKaxRlEPj5g\/arcgis\/rest\/services\/ncov_cases_US\/FeatureServer\/0\">feature service<\/a> into ArcGIS Pro.<\/li>\n<li>Join that to the US County dataset to retrieve coronavirus case data from the feature service for every map refresh.<\/li>\n<li>Improve the performance by downloading the data every hour using ArcGIS Pro 2.5 <a href=\"https:\/\/pro.arcgis.com\/en\/pro-app\/help\/analysis\/geoprocessing\/basics\/schedule-geoprocessing-tools.htm\">geoprocessing scheduler<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Let&#8217;s dive in.<\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<h3><strong>Steps to bring coronavirus data to US county polygon layer:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Insert a new map or open an existing one<\/li>\n<li>Add the feature service in a map in ArcGIS Pro<\/li>\n<li>Make a map or scene in your active view.<\/li>\n<li>On the <strong>Map <\/strong>tab, in the <strong>Layer<\/strong> group, in the\u00a0<strong>Add Data<\/strong> menu, click <strong>Data From Path.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Type the following URL.<br \/>\n<code>https:\/\/services1.arcgis.com\/0MSEUqKaxRlEPj5g\/arcgis\/rest\/services\/ncov_cases_US\/FeatureServer\/0<\/code><\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Add<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Rename the layer <strong>Coronavirus Cases<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Add your county layer from your geodatabase<br \/>\nYou can download it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=b7faa42fe81f444cac66c09bd7d4008c\">from here<\/a> if you don&#8217;t have your own dataset, and store it in a file geodatabase.<br \/>\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Note<\/span>: county polygons are in an equal area projection.<\/li>\n<li>Rename it <strong>US Counties<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Join <strong>Cases<\/strong> layer to the county layer<\/li>\n<li>Select <strong>US Counties<\/strong> layer from the Content pane.<\/li>\n<li>Under\u00a0<strong>Feature Layer<\/strong>, on the\u00a0<strong>Data<\/strong> tab, in the\u00a0<strong>Relationship<\/strong> group, in the\u00a0<strong>Join<\/strong> menu, click\u00a0<strong>Add Join<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Fill in the geoprocessing tool using the values from the table below:<br \/>\n<strong>Layer Name or Table View: <\/strong>US Counties<br \/>\n<strong>Input Join Field<\/strong>: FIPS<br \/>\n<strong>Join Table<\/strong>: Coronavirus Cases<br \/>\n<strong>Output Join Field<\/strong>: State\/County FIPS Code<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Run<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Optional: You can remove the <strong>Coronavirus Cases<\/strong> layer<\/li>\n<li>Open <strong>US Counties<\/strong> layer&#8217;s attribute table window or click on a county to open its attributes in a popup window.<br \/>\nYou will see county features are populated with coronavirus cases data such as Confirmed, Recovered, Deaths, Last Update etc.<\/li>\n<li>Symbolize <strong>US Counties<\/strong> layer appropriately.<br \/>\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Note<\/span>: <em>see Ken Field&#8217;s blog post on how to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/products\/product\/mapping\/mapping-coronavirus-responsibly\/\">map coronavirus responsibly<\/a>. These additional calls made over the internet cause the map to draw slower than expected depending on your internet speed and loads on the server hosting the feature service.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Unnecessary downloads<\/strong>: Since data gets updated every hour, it is unnecessary to make calls to retrieve the same data from an ArcGIS Online server in between.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reliability<\/strong>: In case you have internet outage or network issues, your map won&#8217;t draw anything.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<h3>Solution (part 1): download data to your local geodatabase<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Open <strong>Feature Class to Feature Class<\/strong> geoprocessing tool.<\/li>\n<li>Use <strong>Coronavirus Cases<\/strong> layer as <strong>Input Features<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Set <strong>Output Location<\/strong> to the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">same database<\/span> where you have your US County dataset.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Run<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Once it finishes successfully, follow steps from above to join this <strong>local version<\/strong> of coronavirus cases with your US county layer.<\/li>\n<li>Since <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">both datasets<\/span> are stored in the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">same geodatabase<\/span>, join happens at the database level and performance is much better than joins occurring at application level.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<h3>Solution (part 2): keep it updated every hour<\/h3>\n<p>It is great that at this point, you got your data copied in your local geodatabase and you should see pretty fast drawing. But how do you keep your data updated? Luckily, ArcGIS Pro 2.5 allows geoprocessing tools to be <a class=\"xref xref\" href=\"https:\/\/pro.arcgis.com\/en\/pro-app\/help\/analysis\/geoprocessing\/basics\/schedule-geoprocessing-tools.htm\">scheduled<\/a> to run at a later time or with recurrence.<\/p>\n<p>Since <strong>Feature Class to Feature Class<\/strong> or <strong>Copy Features<\/strong> geoprocessing tool overwrites existing (or creates new) feature class, running one of these tools in the scheduler will fail as existing feature class gets locked while being used.
