Ok, well it turns out a fine fellow named Oliver Burdekin created a quick and easy video tutorial based on this post. So if you&#8217;d rather kick back and watch Oliver do the work then <a title=\"Also narrated in Oliver's authoritative English accent -a marked upgrade over my folksy Midwestern-American accent.\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/z9rhfHADO0c\" target=\"_blank\">have at it<\/a>!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ah the glow of a cool-blue firefly map. There is a sort of balance between the softness of the geographic features and the sharpness of the overall impression.<\/p>\n<p>There are loads of reasons why you might consider firefly for your map, including the visual representation of uncertainty, the intrinsic value of aesthetic appeal, and of course the\u00a0<a title=\"Pow!\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tobler%27s_first_law_of_geography\" target=\"_blank\">First Law of Geography<\/a>&#8230;<\/p>\n<h1><em>Everything is related to everything else, but near things are more related than distant things.<\/em><\/h1>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">This locally-blurred diminishing-impact a feature has on its environment can sometimes be represented by cartographers as a glow. Like these hurricanes&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/08\/ExampleHurricanes.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-85033 noIMGBackground aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/08\/ExampleHurricanes.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Or these earthquakes&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/08\/ExampleEarthquakes.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-85034 noIMGBackground aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/08\/ExampleEarthquakes.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">They use pre-generated glowing dot images as point symbols, available\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nation.maps.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=cd048203333f42869c84908884dae411\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nation.maps.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=c9a4a06a102e4d6c8f5dbea932633172\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>. But what about\u00a0<em>lines<\/em>? How can we cobble together a passable glowing line effect, like in this saber-licious\u00a0map of tornadoes&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/08\/ExampleTornados.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-85035 noIMGBackground aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/08\/ExampleTornados.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Or this irradiated\u00a0map of hexbins?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/08\/ExampleHexbins.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-85036 noIMGBackground aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/08\/ExampleHexbins.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a hack! And a super simple one. You just make a handful of copies of your line or polygon feature and make them nearly transparent (say, around 85%), assign the layers&#8217; stroke color that of your mapped theme, and give each layer a slightly thicker stroke. The topmost layer should be the thinnest stroke and have a faint white color (and, if it&#8217;s a polygon layer, a semi-transparent thematic fill).<\/p>\n<p>Sounds more complicated than it is. Let&#8217;s walk through this using the most visceral example I can think of.<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center\">&#8230;<\/h1>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">It all starts with a thin, white, semi-transparent stroke.<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/08\/SaberBuilder1.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-85037 noIMGBackground\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/08\/SaberBuilder1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"3000\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">Behind this, we paste a nearly transparent copy and give it a slightly thicker stroke in the color of our choice.<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/08\/SaberBuilder2.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-85038 noIMGBackground\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/08\/SaberBuilder2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"3000\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">And do it again.<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/08\/SaberBuilder3.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-85039 noIMGBackground\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/08\/SaberBuilder3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"3000\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">And again. In the following example I have a nice smoking hot firefly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/livingatlas.arcgis.com\/en\/#s=0&amp;q=firefly\" target=\"_blank\">basemap<\/a>\u00a0all ready to go&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/08\/ProScreenshot1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-85041 noIMGBackground\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/08\/ProScreenshot1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1040\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ah ArcGIS Pro with a firefly style basemap. So comforting. So accommodating.<br \/>\nSee the set of layers on the left? Let&#8217;s walk through each of those&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Here is a layer of country boundaries.<br \/>\nStroke thickness 0.7pt<br \/>\nLayer transparency 40%<br \/>\n#FFFFFF<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/08\/ProScreenshot2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-85042 noIMGBackground\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/08\/ProScreenshot2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1040\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A copy of the layer, positioned beneath it in the Contents panel, is slightly thicker, and nearly transparent. It&#8217;s pretty subtle but that&#8217;s the point \u2013this hack is an additive process.<br \/>\nStroke thickness 3pt<br \/>\nLayer transparency 85%<br \/>\n#00FFC5<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/08\/ProScreenshot3.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-85043 noIMGBackground\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/08\/ProScreenshot3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1040\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A second copy of the stroke adds some more dimension.<br \/>\nStroke thickness 5pt<br \/>\nLayer transparency 85%<br \/>\n#00C5FF<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/08\/ProScreenshot4.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-85044 noIMGBackground\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/08\/ProScreenshot4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1040\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here, with only three colorized copies of the lines and already we have a passable glow effect. Of course it&#8217;s up to you to add more, for a smoother, or thicker, effect but there is a trade-off in performance if you are building a web map.<br \/>\nStroke thickness 7pt<br \/>\nLayer transparency 85%<br \/>\n#005CE6<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/08\/ProScreenshot4_5.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-85045 noIMGBackground\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/08\/ProScreenshot4_5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1040\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Alternatively, instead of making multiple copies of the layer, you can achieve the same effect by using multiple renderings of a single layer using <a href=\"http:\/\/pro.arcgis.com\/en\/pro-app\/help\/mapping\/symbols-and-styles\/symbol-layer-drawing.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Symbol Layer Drawing<\/a> (in the real world Symbol Layer Drawing lets you put casing around roads and stuff).<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Tommy Fauvell gave me this image.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/08\/SymbolLayers.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-85061 noIMGBackground\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/08\/SymbolLayers.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"508\" height=\"818\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When it comes to <em>thematic<\/em> maps (like the tornado and hexbin maps at the top), you&#8217;ll want the glow colors to be tied to a data range. In this case you&#8217;ll have to define a manageable handful of classes, and break them out into separate groups of &#8220;glow&#8221; layers for each class. It&#8217;s a little bit of effort, but nothing of value comes without some amount of effort.<br \/>\nSo there it is. A simple method (hack) for making lines and polygons glow all firefly-style.
