This year...","flexible_content":[{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<p>A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of attending the annual North American Cartographic Information Society (<a href=\"http:\/\/nacis.org\/\">NACIS<\/a>) conference. This year&#8217;s conference was held in Montr\u00e9al. For one of my presentations, co-presented with\u00a0Clint Loveman, I demoed how to make this art deco-themed map using the ArcGIS\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.esri.com\/software\/maps-for-adobecc\">Maps for Adobe Creative Cloud<\/a>\u00a0extension (M4CC) inside of Adobe Illustrator. This post describes some useful information for constructing a map like this one.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_88811\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-88811\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Montreal_ArtDeco_cerebellumaps.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-88811\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Montreal_ArtDeco_cerebellumaps.jpg\" alt=\"Montreal Art Deco Buildings Map by Sarah Bell\" width=\"1000\" height=\"694\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-88811\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Art-Deco themed Montreal Map featuring art deco buildings<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>1. Dissolve\u00a0big datasets that don&#8217;t need attributes for final output<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some cities make finding their building footprint data very easy. For other cities, it is a little more challenging. This is when I like to use\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.openstreetmap.org\/\">OpenStreetMap<\/a>, which is crowdsourced geographic data\u00a0available to members\u00a0within the Open Database License. For this Montr\u00e9al map, I used OpenStreetMap building footprint data (.osm), which was converted into a .shp file.<\/p>\n<p>While I only mapped the area surrounding the NACIS 2017 conference, that is still a lot of building footprints! A row created for each one of these buildings can be pretty heavy, and since I knew I was only going to be using the the footprints as a visual backdrop, it was not important to keep the heavily attributed information for each building footprint. For the purpose of simplification and data size reduction, I performed a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/pro.arcgis.com\/en\/pro-app\/tool-reference\/data-management\/dissolve.htm\">dissolve<\/a>\u00a0function on the .shp file, not specifying any field upon which to dissolve. Doing so gave me a simple .shp file that contains all the footprints in my map&#8217;s extent in one single row in the database.<\/p>\n<p>The reason for simplifying data like this is twofold: 1) You will shorten the load time of your file to the Illustrator extension; 2) Your map download\/sync time will be improved as well.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.\u00a0Use those\u00a0incredible KML files!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While you cannot add raw KML files to the M4CC extension, there are still ways to use them. The web is full of really great user-generated KML files, including yours! All you need to do is convert the KML\/KMZ file to a Comma Separated Value (CSV) file, or convert it to a feature class or .shp file, and you&#8217;ll then be able to load it into them to your map easily. There are several resources online for converting a KML file to a CSV file, and there is a conversion tool for KML files in ArcMap and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/pro.arcgis.com\/en\/pro-app\/tool-reference\/conversion\/kml-to-layer.htm\">ArcGIS Pro<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The location of art deco buildings started out as a KML file\u00a0from a map\u00a0created and curated by the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/artdecomontreal.com\/\">Art Deco Society of Montreal<\/a>. So all the credit for the art deco building locations goes to this wonderful resource.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Use the app to leverage those custom Illustrator symbols<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ve experienced the time it takes to manually replace map symbols in AI with your beautiful custom Illustrator symbols that you worked so hard on. But it doesn&#8217;t have to take so long! You can\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/community.esri.com\/external-link.jspa?url=http%3A%2F%2Fdoc.arcgis.com%2Fen%2Fmaps-for-adobecc%2Fsync-content%2Fprocesses.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">replace map symbology<\/a>\u00a0with the M4CC tool automatically with one simple step. For this art deco map, I created an AI symbols library that contained a symbols for\u00a0<em>fire stations, police stations, emergency medical stations,<\/em>\u00a0a circle symbol for the background of the art deco building symbol,\u00a0<em>\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>monuments.\u00a0<\/em>In total the amount of symbols is around sixty. Manually dragging and dropping each symbol to the map, and then deleting the original symbol would be somewhat time consuming. It doesn&#8217;t take a vivid imagination to picture a scenario with hundreds of symbols that need to be replaced. Using the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/community.esri.com\/external-link.jspa?url=http%3A%2F%2Fdoc.arcgis.com%2Fen%2Fmaps-for-adobecc%2Fsync-content%2Fprocesses.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Custom Symbols<\/a>\u00a0option in the Settings tab of the M4CC extension can save you a ton of time, while still giving you full creative control over the appearance of your map. See the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/community.esri.com\/external-link.jspa?url=http%3A%2F%2Fdoc.arcgis.com%2Fen%2Fmaps-for-adobecc%2Fsync-content%2Fprocesses.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Maps for Creative Cloud Help<\/a>\u00a0for instructions on how to set up custom symbol replacement.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_88814\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-88814\" style=\"width: 624px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/10\/CustomSymbolsArtDeco.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-88814\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/10\/CustomSymbolsArtDeco.png\" alt=\"Custom Map Symbols in M4CC Adobe Illustrator\" width=\"624\" height=\"464\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-88814\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Some of the many custom symbols that were automatically placed using the M4CC extension in Adobe Illustrator<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>4. This is possible within the M4CC extension.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The M4CC extension\u00a0gives you access ArcGIS Online\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.esri.com\/software\/arcgis\/smart-mapping\">smart-mapping<\/a>\u00a0tools, which provide a lot of geo-data visualization capabilities. This Montreal art deco map doesn&#8217;t have a lot of what can be considered\u00a0<em>data visualization,\u00a0<\/em>however all maps are a form of data visualization. I used the smart mapping tools to categorize the roads by type so that they would appear in separate categories as neatly organized sub-layers in the Illustrator Layers panel. This allows me to globally style each category accordingly.
