Just <a title=\"There's your afternoon all sorted.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.etsy.com\/search\/vintage?q=maps&amp;use_mmx=1&amp;vintage_rewrite=vintage+maps&amp;original_query=2&amp;orig_facet=\" target=\"_blank\">window shop here<\/a> for a moment to fall into the eye-watering depths of cartographic charm.<\/p>\n<p>One of my favorite aspects of these maps is their lovely coastal effects. Often they are water-lines, buffered out at some magical interval, and sometimes they are stippled-in using a pointillist technique to imply varying density and distance.<\/p>\n<p>To give you an idea, here&#8217;s a map by <a title=\"His stuff was insanely ahead of its time...\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?rlz=1C1GGRV_enUS751US751&amp;biw=1920&amp;bih=974&amp;tbm=isch&amp;sa=1&amp;ei=yvkBWrnjCNHsjwPlz7_wDQ&amp;q=matthew+maury+map&amp;oq=matthew+maury+map&amp;gs_l=psy-ab.3...8983.8983.0.9158.1.1.0.0.0.0.0.0..0.0....0...1.1.64.psy-ab..1.0.0....0.TkJ7LWOx_bc\" target=\"_blank\">Matthew Maury<\/a> using varied stippling to denote bathymetric levels (inverted, to my mind).<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Click here to read all about this dude...\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Matthew_Fontaine_Maury\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-89361 noIMGBackground\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Maury.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1904\" height=\"920\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>HOW<\/p>\n<p>ArcGIS Pro lets us dabble in a flavor of this technique, and it&#8217;s actually <a title=\"In a matter of a couple minutes, I tells you!\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/John_M_Nelson\/status\/927909728625324032\" target=\"_blank\">pretty simple<\/a> (or mega-easy, depending on your favored parlance). If you are feeling dangerous, you can just <a title=\"ArcGIS Pro lets us do amazing things. I love it...I may be in love with it. These are feelings I don't understand yet, but I want to explore them.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=1bc7c4d4de444eea8b61cc098902c2f0\" target=\"_blank\">download my Pro project<\/a> and ignore the rest of this post.<\/p>\n<p>In ArcGIS Pro, I rendered up some <a title=\"Where would we be without the humble workhorse of GIS, the buffer!\" href=\"http:\/\/pro.arcgis.com\/en\/pro-app\/tool-reference\/analysis\/multiple-ring-buffer.htm\" target=\"_blank\">multi-ring buffers<\/a> around a global land layer. Instead of filling in each ring with a color, I just used an image fill of dots that I made. That&#8217;s it! Here&#8217;s what my stipple texture image looks like, all zoomed-in&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Right-click and choose &quot;save target as&quot; to download the actual teeny little PNG image.\" href=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/adventuresinmapping.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/07\/stipple.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-89362 noIMGBackground\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/11\/StippleScreenshot.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"415\" height=\"415\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You can download this image <a title=\"Right-click; save target as\" href=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/adventuresinmapping.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/07\/stipple.png\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>. It&#8217;s the only image I&#8217;ll use to create the coastal stipple effect.<\/p>\n<p>Ok, backing up, here is the layer of the buffered coastal areas. I gave it a graduated color symbology, based on the buffer distance.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/11\/BufferDefault.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-89363 noIMGBackground\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/11\/BufferDefault.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"419\" height=\"879\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Click to embiggen...\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/11\/BufferDefaultMap.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-89364 noIMGBackground\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/11\/BufferDefaultMap.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1431\" height=\"913\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Nice and standard. But let&#8217;s wind our pocket watches back to 1870 and see what some standard symbology might look like then&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Click to embiggen...\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/11\/BufferStipple1.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-89366 noIMGBackground\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/11\/BufferStipple1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1279\" height=\"1769\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Instead of a color fill, I gave each polygon a &#8220;Picture fill&#8221;. I chose the same stipple image for each one, and made them slightly smaller and darker the closer they come to land. They stack up on each other, and the difference in stipple density gives a sweet Victorian-era drop-shadow! Here is the steampunky result&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Click to embiggen...\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/11\/BufferStippleMap.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-89367 noIMGBackground\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/11\/BufferStippleMap.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1431\" height=\"913\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>How grand. I wanted to give the background a foxed yellowed period-paper texture, so I snagged a blank page from the <a title=\"Another afternoon, all sorted...\" href=\"http:\/\/www.oshermaps.org\/container?id=3610\" target=\"_blank\">Statistical Atlas of the United States<\/a> and dropped it in the background (and also as a picture fill for the land areas). I gave the stipple fills a blue tint that I eye-dropped from the lovely old atlas and it looks like this&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Click to embiggen...\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/11\/BufferStippleMapWithBackground1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-89376 noIMGBackground\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/11\/BufferStippleMapWithBackground1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1431\" height=\"913\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Actually, in the stipple-map era, they really had <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jeannette_Expedition\" target=\"_blank\">no idea<\/a> what the arctic areas looked like. But we do now.
