You will locate the app template, configure your app, and use the application to identify burn scars<\/p>\n<p><strong>Creating and Configuring the Image Interpretation App<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1. Create a new web map<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px\">Esri\u2019s Living Atlas provides many different image services; in this <\/span>example<span style=\"font-size: 14px\">, we will use Esri\u2019s world-wide dynamic Multispectral Landsat 8 <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/webapps.maps.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=d9b466d6a9e647ce8d1dd5fe12eb434b\">image service<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 14px\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Sign in to your ArcGIS Organization<\/li>\n<li>Save this <a href=\"http:\/\/arcg.is\/4419a\">Imagery Blog web map<\/a> to your content by opening the map and selecting Save As.\u00a0 Save in a location you can reference later when creating your app.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<p>2. Locate the Image Interpretation (beta) configurable app<\/p>\n<p>Since the Image Interpretation template is still in beta, you\u2019ll need to seek out the template\u2014it won\u2019t be available with the rest of the app templates.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To find it, make sure you\u2019re logged in to ArcGIS Online; search for \u201ctags:Imagery Interpretation Template\u201d; and make sure you uncheck \u201cOnly search in &lt;My Org Name&gt;\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Open the item details by clicking \u201cImage Interpretation (beta)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2018\/11\/image-app-pic.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-89435\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2018\/11\/image-app-pic.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1097\" height=\"228\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>3. Create a web app<\/p>\n<p>Once you are on the item details of the Image Interpretation (beta) app you can begin creating your own app.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Select Create a Web App.\u00a0<em>Tip: If you don\u2019t see the Create a Web App button, verify you are signed in. You may need to return to\u00a0<\/em><em>step 2.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Provide a descriptive title and tags and click OK<\/li>\n<li>Select your web map you created earlier<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px\">4. Configure your app<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The purpose of this app is\u00a0to easily identify a burned area in Lake County, CA using the Change Detection tool, and then visualize before and after images using the Compare tool.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>On the General tab, check Enable search tool to add a location search tool in the web app<\/li>\n<li>Navigate to the Imagery Layers tab in the configuration panel<\/li>\n<li>Check on all four tools: Enable Layer Selector Tool, Enable Rendered Tool, Enable Compare, and Enable Export Tool.\u00a0\u00a0 Take a moment to read the descriptions of the tools. \u00a0Configure the tools to match the screenshot.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2018\/11\/4-tools3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-89468\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2018\/11\/4-tools3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"527\" height=\"844\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Navigate to the Image Selector Tab.Check Enable Image Selector Tool.\u00a0 Change the Display drop-down to \u2018Slider and Drop-down List\u2019<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2018\/11\/enableimageselector2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-89470\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2018\/11\/enableimageselector2-300x177.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"177\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Under the Imagery Layers section, check Multispectral Landsat, then check the AcquisitionDate field. Enabling AcquisitionDate will let you choose which images you want to compare based on their acquisition date.<\/li>\n<li>Navigate to the Image Date Tab\n<ul>\n<li>Check Enable Image Date<\/li>\n<li>Enter \u201cAcquisitionDate\u201d as the label<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Check Multispectral Landsat and select AcquisitionDate<\/li>\n<li>Navigate to the Image Date Tab<\/li>\n<li>Check Enable Image Date<\/li>\n<li>Enter \u201cAcquisition\u00a0Date\u201d for the label<\/li>\n<li>Check Multispectral Landsat and select AcquisitionDate<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-89479\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2018\/11\/imagedate2-300x176.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"176\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Interacting with the Image Interpretation App<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You will now interact with the app and use the Renderer, Change Detection, and Compare tools to explore a burn scar.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px\">1.Use the Renderer <\/span>tool <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-89495 noIMGBackground\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2018\/11\/rendertool3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"48\" height=\"50\" \/>to<span style=\"font-size: 14px\"> view the image using Short-Wave Infrared with DRA. Hit Apply.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><em>Tip: Mouse over each tool for a descriptive tool-tip.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>2. Use the Image Selector tool to find the Landsat scenes you\u2019ll compare.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Open the Image Selector Tool<\/li>\n<li>Check Enable Image Selector<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-89516\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2018\/11\/ISDate6-300x216.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"216\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Change the slider to a drop-down using the scroll icon circled on the right in the screenshot.<\/li>\n<li>Select Aug 3, 2015, from the drop-down, the date the burn scar appeared<\/li>\n<li>Click the arrow button to set the Aug 3 image as the comparison layer, circled in the screenshot.<\/li>\n<li>Now, another date will need to be selected to compare with the burn scar image. From the drop-down list, select August 5, 2016, a year after the burn. The image in the display will update to the newly selected date.\u00a0<em>Tip: Two images always need to be selected to use the Compare tool. This can be two separate imagery layers or two different dates within an image service.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>3.Use the Compare tool to explore the differences between the before and after images.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Activate the Compare tool.\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-89493 noIMGBackground\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2018\/11\/comparet2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"49\" height=\"56\" \/> Immediately you will notice your Compare tool is set to the previously selected date and the currently displayed date\u2014August 3, 2015, and August 5,2016.<\/li>\n<li>Use the vertical slider to view the differences between the two images<\/li>\n<li>Click the Compare tool icon to turn off the tool when you are done<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px\">4. Use the Change Detection tool to create an image of where the burn scar occurred.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Activate the Change Detection tool\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-89494 noIMGBackground\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2018\/11\/change-det-icon1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"48\" height=\"55\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Click Apply to create a difference image, which subtracts one image from the other to show you where the differences are<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is a quick introduction to a few of the
