All you need to do is sign in to ArcGIS Online and you&#8217;re on your way.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/12\/blogoverview_smal_cr.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-90046\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/12\/blogoverview_smal_cr.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"582\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1>Explore point cloud styles<\/h1>\n<p>To visualize point cloud scene layers, I can choose one of the different smart mapping drawing styles available based on the point cloud attributes: True Color, Class, Elevation, and Intensity. Each style has its own strengths and value depending on the scene I\u2019m trying to create. For example, I can use the Elevation style to explore and understand the changing elevation of the structures and terrain in my scenes.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/12\/blog2_styles_small.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-90041\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/12\/blog2_styles_small.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"318\" height=\"498\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<em>Hint:<\/em> The smart mapping styles also include an easy-to-use slider that lets me manually change the point size from smaller to larger and vice versa. Furthermore, if my point cloud layer doesn\u2019t match the terrain, I can apply an offset to my point cloud layer to align it better.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1>Show your true colors<\/h1>\n<p>If I&#8217;m interested in displaying the realistic look and feel of my city or landscape, I would choose the True Color style because it displays point cloud data with the true RGB values collected in the <a href=\"http:\/\/pro.arcgis.com\/en\/pro-app\/help\/data\/las-dataset\/what-is-lidar-.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LiDAR remote-sensing process<\/a>. For example, this\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/webscene\/viewer.html?webscene=b3b67d07ef844cfea6cc825a807923ff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">scene of Mile High Stadium<\/a>\u00a0in Denver, Colorado really got my attention. The scene showcases point cloud data created by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.merrick.com\/Geospatial\/Services\/LiDAR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Merrick<\/a>\u00a0and with the True Color style chosen, I can even clearly see the team name \u201cBRONCOS\u201d spelled out in the end zone!<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/12\/blog3_stadium_crop.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-90042\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/12\/blog3_stadium_crop.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"508\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1>Can I see my point cloud data classified?<\/h1>\n<p>With the Class style, I can assign a specific color to the classes in the point cloud data defined in the collection process.\u00a0 This is helpful when I want to emphasize and distinguish the most important elements of my scene, such as buildings, plants and vegetation, and ground.\u00a0 When I open the Class style, I can see what classes are available by looking at the list and also in the legend.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/11\/blog4_class.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-88985\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/11\/blog4_class.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1118\" height=\"608\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<em>Hint:<\/em> If I turn the \u201cModulate using intensity \u201coption on, I can shade the color of the points based on the intensity value (see the Intensity style below). This improves depth perception and perspective of my point cloud scene when many nearby points have the same color. By adding this option and playing around with the class colors, I can see much more detail, such as the roads and roof structures.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/11\/blog5_class-modualte.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-88984\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/11\/blog5_class-modualte.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"543\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nAlso, in case you&#8217;re wondering what those trees are doing on the highway, please don&#8217;t call the forest service. They&#8217;re actually cars. However, LiDAR scanning is not a perfect science and sometimes automated classification fails and puts some points in the wrong category.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1>What I\u2019d really like to see is the elevation of my points<\/h1>\n<p>I chose the Elevation style to visualize this\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/webscene\/viewer.html?webscene=1258afba151645c8abaa3e8bd7d72cfb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Helsinki scene<\/a>\u00a0I created to emphasize the higher areas and structures. Knowing the elevation of buildings and terrain throughout Helsinki is very important from an urban planning, environmental, or industrial perspective. For example, if I am in the shipping or utilities industries, I may want to focus on structures higher than a certain height, such as cargo cranes or power lines. I can adjust the Elevation style sliders to make the higher areas and structures stand out more.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/12\/blog6_elevation-style_crop.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-90043\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/12\/blog6_elevation-style_crop.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1130\" height=\"723\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1>What is intensity in point clouds?<\/h1>\n<p>Using the Intensity style is another great way to see the fine details and textures of Helsinki&#8217;s urban landscape.\u00a0Intensity is a measure of the return strength of the laser pulse that generated the points in the point cloud data collection process. With the Intensity style on, I can get even more detail and contrast in my scene by adjusting the slider to match the distribution of point values.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/11\/blog7_intensity1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-88987\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/11\/blog7_intensity1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1118\" height=\"650\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nFirst, I drop down the top slider bar to 190 intensity value. Then I set the maximum value to 200 to reset the distribution of the color ramp.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/11\/blog8_intensity2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-88988\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/11\/blog8_intensity2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1118\" height=\"651\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nNow I can really see the contrast between the buildings, streets, trees, and canals.
