We\u2019ve just added a new capability that many of you have been asking for.\u00a0 In addition to defining fields (hide or show fields) and defining features (attribute-based filtering), you can now define an area of interest for a view.\u00a0 By defining an area of interest, you can control the features a user can access geographically.<\/p>\n<p>Define area of interest makes it easier to maintain a geographically large dataset (global, national, state) while providing the ability to limit the area a user or group of users can access.\u00a0 You might want to do this for a variety of reasons\u2014for example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To restrict a subcontractor\u2019s access to only the features in the area they\u2019re working in<\/li>\n<li>To provide users with a specific geographic area to manage or work with<\/li>\n<li>To focus the narrative of the dataset you\u2019re using on a specific area when building your story map<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ready to get started? Begin from the Visualization tab on the item page of the hosted feature layer view or from Map Viewer. In the layer\u2019s menu, choose <strong>Set View Definition<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Define an Area of Interest<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/12\/B09-Img1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-90689 noIMGBackground\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/12\/B09-Img1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"385\" height=\"212\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now use the tools provided to define an area of interest.\u00a0 By default, the drawing tool will draw an extent. You can switch the drawing method to polygon if you need to create an area of interest with an irregular shape. \u00a0You can also use the search box to define an area of interest based on a search result\u2019s extent.\u00a0 This will work with place finding results as well as feature search (if configured on the map).\u00a0 In the example below I\u2019m showing NASA\u2019s daily active fire dataset and creating an area of interest to focus on the area of Ventura California where active wildfires are currently being battled.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/12\/DefineAOI_small_clipped.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-90698 noIMGBackground\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/12\/DefineAOI_small_clipped.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"499\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019re satisfied with the area you\u2019ve drawn, click <strong>Apply<\/strong> and the hosted feature layer view will update.\u00a0 The area of interest you set is saved to the hosted feature layer view itself and will be honored everywhere it is used. You\u2019ll no longer be able to access data outside the area of interest when using the view.\u00a0 That means if the layer is editable, users won\u2019t be able to see or modify features outside the area of interest. However, the full extent of the data is still available in the primary feature layer you used to create the view, as well as from any additional views you\u2019ve created from the primary layer.<\/p>\n<p>If you need to change the area of interest, just go back into the same menu, click Remove Definition, then create the new area of interest. \u00a0To learn more about defining an area
