Photos and images you want to use can be stored on your own servers, or using Flickr, Google, and other online repositories. In addition, there are currently five story maps &#8211; Story Map Tour, Cascade, Journal, Shortlist, and Series &#8211; that enable you to add locally stored photos or images, and host them for use in your story within the story map item.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">*<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #0079c1;\">Why we recommend uploading local images<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Uploading local images is the recommended way to add images to your story maps, and there are several good reasons for this.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your images are stored with your Story Map, and don&#8217;t need to be managed as separate items.<\/li>\n<li>When you upload local images, they are automatically resized and optimized for the web. You don&#8217;t need to do any of this extra work.<\/li>\n<li>The images are not publicly accessible if your Story Map is not publicly accessible. So if your story is intended for internal use within your organization, your photos also stay private with the Story Map.<\/li>\n<li>It&#8217;s easy!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here&#8217;s how to use these story maps to add photos or images from your local drives.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">*<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #0079c1;\">Story Map Tour<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/storymaps.arcgis.com\/en\/app-list\/map-tour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Story Map Tour<\/a> presents a set of photos or videos along with captions which are linked to an interactive map. It&#8217;s ideal for walking tours or any sequence of places you\u2019d like users to follow in order, with room for exploration.<\/p>\n<p>To add locally stored photos or images you must have Publisher or equivalent privileges. Follow these steps to add and host your photos.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 1.<\/strong> Sign in to your ArcGIS account.<\/p>\n<p>Go to the Story Maps website at <a href=\"http:\/\/storymaps.arcgis.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">storymaps.arcgis.com<\/a>. Sign in using your credentials.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-69792\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2016\/10\/local-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"410\" height=\"126\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 2.<\/strong> Launch the Story Map Tour builder.<\/p>\n<p>One way to launch the Map Tour builder is to click the Apps tab at the top of the page, scroll down to find Story Map Tour, then click Build.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-95508\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2017\/01\/local-11.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"196\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 3:<\/strong> Choose ArcGIS to upload your images.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-69797\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2016\/10\/local-31.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"562\" height=\"331\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You will be prompted to specify a feature layer name. Enter the Layer name, then click <em>Create the layer<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-69800\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2016\/10\/local-41.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"302\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> You must be a Publisher or in another role with privileges to publish hosted Feature Layers. Please contact your ArcGIS administrator if you do not have these privileges. This option is also unavailable for those using a public account.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 5:<\/strong> Add your photos.<\/p>\n<p>In the lower middle section of the Map Tour builder, click Add:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-69802\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2016\/10\/local-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"356\" height=\"88\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Then drag and drop a local image, or click <em>Select or drop picture<\/em> to\u00a0browse and select it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-69803\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2016\/10\/local-6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"330\" height=\"114\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Your images will be optimized and automatically stored as attachments for each point in your tour, one for the featured image and another for the thumbnail.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">*<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #0079c1;\">Story Map Cascade<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/storymaps.arcgis.com\/en\/app-list\/cascade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Story Map Cascade<\/a> enables you to create an engaging full-screen scrolling experience for your audience blending narrative text, maps, 3D scenes, images, videos, and more.\u00a0To add locally stored photos you do not need special privileges (because of the way the images are stored). Follow these steps to add and host photos for use in Cascade.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 1.<\/strong> Sign in to your ArcGIS account.<\/p>\n<p>Go to the Story Maps website at <a href=\"http:\/\/storymaps.arcgis.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">storymaps.arcgis.com<\/a>. Images are automatically optimized and stored with your Story Map Cascade. No special privileges are needed, and this option also works for public account users.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">*<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #0079c1;\">Story Map Series<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/storymaps.arcgis.com\/en\/app-list\/map-series\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Story Map Series<\/a> presents a series of maps and accompanying text and media via tabs, bullets, or a side accordion.\u00a0To add locally stored photos you do not need special privileges. Follow these steps to add and host photos for use in Series. For this example we are using the Story Map Series <a href=\"http:\/\/storymaps.arcgis.com\/en\/app-list\/map-series\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tabbed layout<\/a>, similar steps exist if you are using the Bulleted or Side Accordion layouts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 1.<\/strong>\u00a0Sign in to your ArcGIS account.<\/p>\n<p>Go to the Story Maps website at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/storymaps.arcgis.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">storymaps.arcgis.com<\/a>.
