We have introduced new coverage for areas that previously lacked high resolution imagery, and we continue to refresh existing coverage.<br \/>\nRecent and pending +Vivid Updates include: Afghanistan, Australia, Canada North West Territories and Yukon, United Kingdom, United States, and coming soon\u2026a refresh of Western Europe.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2018\/01\/VividCoverage1e.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-96224\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2018\/01\/VividCoverage1e-1024x607.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"379\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The release of +Vivid across the United States is a significant step forward in terms of optimizing the overall depth, breadth, and currency of World Imagery coverage&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Improved Currency.<\/strong>\u00a0 As we had already done for Western Europe, we have now replaced the existing Bing Aerial imagery across the US.\u00a0 The Bing Aerial imagery was beyond the targeted currency of World Imagery (&gt;5 years) and introducing +Vivid allowed us to bring the imagery to within 0-3 years of currency.\u00a0 However, because the Bing Aerial imagery still offers significant value to some of our users, it will continue to be available through our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=ab399b847323487dba26809bf11ea91a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Imagery (Clarity)<\/a> basemap tile service.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Improved detail \u2013 Large Scales.\u00a0<\/strong> +Vivid for the CONUS provides a high level of detail (50cm resolution) with very good visual consistency which means that we can deliver greater consistency across the country and across zoom levels, from medium to large scales.\u00a0 Given these advantages, we have replaced most of NAIP in World Imagery.\u00a0 Still need access to NAIP?\u00a0 Not to worry, users can still access NAIP\u00a0as an Imagery Layer\u00a0through our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=3f8d2d3828f24c00ae279db4af26d566\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NAIP Image Service<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Improved detail \u2013 Medium Scales.<\/strong>\u00a0 Our user community has requested improved quality, detail, and currency at the mid-range scales of World Imagery.\u00a0 The introduction of +Vivid has provided some key visual improvements, including coastal regions, which will enable us to follow through with this request.\u00a0 More details to come on this early in 2018\u2026.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tradeoffs.<\/strong>\u00a0 While +Vivid generally provides significant improvements for World Imagery, and the source product is curated to remove most cloud coverage, clouds can occur in some locations.\u00a0 If a user should encounter clouds over a location of interest, the aforementioned World Imagery (Clarity) and NAIP Image Services are excellent options for alternate sources of imagery.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Sample comparison of NAIP 2016 vs +Vivid 2016 over Lower Manhattan&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Vivid-vs-NAIP-Manhattan.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-96093\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Vivid-vs-NAIP-Manhattan-1024x360.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>DigitalGlobe Basemap +Metro<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In our ongoing effort to \u2018keep it fresh\u2019, since October, World Imagery has received new imagery for 340 +Metro cities. That is more than half of our total +Metro city count! More than 300 of these cities are second generation publications\u2026fresh imagery for cities that we just published within the previous year! Check out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/apps\/MapSeries\/index.html?appid=764ca9b83add496ab90aba74405ef4a9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">What&#8217;s New &#8211; DigitalGlobe Basemap +Metro<\/a> for some highlights and a full listing of cities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Community Maps Imagery<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We continue to receive many high quality and high value contributions through our <a href=\"https:\/\/livingatlas.arcgis.com\/en\/participate\/#v=community&amp;subTab=what-to-contribute\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Community Maps Program<\/a>. World Imagery has recently received many significant Community Maps contributions.
