The benefits of using the Esri Vector Basemaps were shared in a <a title=\"Coming Soon! Updates to Esri Vector Basemaps\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.esri.com\/esri\/arcgis\/2017\/11\/30\/esri-vector-basemaps-update-coming-soon-v2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent blog post<\/a>\u00a0and we updated the vector map content again this week. This latest release includes newer HERE data for both North America and Europe as well as 14 new and 16 updated contributions added through our <a title=\"Community Maps Program\" href=\"https:\/\/livingatlas.arcgis.com\/en\/participate\/#v=community&amp;subTab=what-to-contribute\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Community Maps Program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>V2<\/strong> is the current version and the only version we\u2019re updating now. If you\u2019ve been using vector basemaps prior to December 2017, you need to update the version in your web maps or in Pro. Item 6 is the most relevant if you made your own copy of and\/or customized an Esri Vector Basemap layer.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Title contains &#8220;&#8230;(Mature Support)&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Summary states &#8220;This (v1) vector tile layer is in mature support&#8230;&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>It shows it&#8217;s Deprecated next to the thumbnail<\/li>\n<li>The item description begins with an important note&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>Tags show &#8220;v1, mature support, deprecated&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>URL path contains v1 (or possibly b2 from our beta release)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-96541 noIMGBackground\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2019\/12\/MatureSupport1.jpg\" alt=\"Mature Support\" width=\"600\" height=\"391\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-96555 noIMGBackground\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2019\/12\/TagsandURL.jpg\" alt=\"Tags and URL\" width=\"382\" height=\"390\" \/><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">\u00a0.<\/span><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #008000;\">HOW TO UPDATE TO (v2)&#8230; step by step<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>1)\u00a0WHO:\u00a0 Users in an organization already configured to use the default Esri Vector Basemap gallery.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t already have this option, but want to add it to your ArcGIS Online org, your admin can:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Click Edit Settings under Organization<\/li>\n<li>Select the Map tab<\/li>\n<li>In the Basemap Gallery section check \u201cUse Esri vector basemaps in supported ArcGIS apps\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Click Save.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">You can also include vector basemaps in your custom gallery. This gallery will then be used in all supported ArcGIS apps.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-96519 noIMGBackground\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2019\/12\/DefaultEsriVectorBasemapGallery.jpg\" alt=\"Default Esri Vector Basemap Gallery\" width=\"600\" height=\"189\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>HOW TO:\u00a0From the Basemap tab in ArcGIS Online, select one of the Esri Vector Basemaps from this default gallery and resave your web map.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In Pro, the process is similar. Under the Map tab, Basemaps, select one of the vector basemaps from the gallery. This will replace your existing basemap with the new version (v2) vector basemap, no matter if it was an older (v1) vector basemap or a raster basemap.\u00a0These vector web maps in the gallery will always be configured to contain the latest version of the vector layers.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-96516 noIMGBackground\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Selectabasemap.jpg\" alt=\"Select a basemap\" width=\"388\" height=\"512\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>2)\u00a0<strong>WHO:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Users who aren\u2019t using the default Esri Vector Basemap gallery, but are using an Esri vector layer (v1) as their basemap or as another layer.<\/h3>\n<p>This approach adds a new (v2) layer you can configure as a basemap or keep as a separate layer in your web map. Follow this approach if you&#8217;re updating to a vector basemap from a raster basemap or if you&#8217;re updating from your own customized basemap.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>HOW TO:\u00a0 The most direct route in ArcGIS Online is to Add &gt; Browse Living Atlas Layers.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This approach is similar in ArcGIS Pro. There you search through Catalog &gt; Portal &gt; Living Atlas. In the map viewer, you can also select Search for Layers:\u00a0 from ArcGIS Online, in your Content, or in your Organization, etc. You still enter through the Add tab and set your search options accordingly.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-96523 noIMGBackground\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2019\/12\/AddLivingAtlas.jpg\" alt=\"Browse Living Atlas Layers\" width=\"185\" height=\"229\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In the Browse Living Atlas Layers, narrow your search by showing only <strong>Esri layers<\/strong> from the <strong>Esri Basemaps<\/strong> category and limiting the search with keyword:\u00a0 <strong>vector<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-96525\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2019\/12\/AddLivingAtlasAGOL.jpg\" alt=\"Browse Living Atlas Layers in ArcGIS Online\" width=\"600\" height=\"538\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Hovering over the map thumbnail displays a description of the layer. In this example World Navigation Map has the summary:\u00a0 <em>This (v2) vector tile layer&#8230;\u00a0<\/em>You have options how to add this to your web map: As Layer or As Basemap.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-96532 noIMGBackground\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2019\/12\/HoverAdd.jpg\" alt=\"Living Atlas v2 Hover and Add\" width=\"600\" height=\"256\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you are replacing only one layer in your basemap, you can Add to map &gt; As Basemap.\u00a0 This option will entirely replace the existing basemap in your web map with this new version (v2). This works well for styles such as <a title=\"World Street Map\" href=\"http:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=de26a3cf4cc9451298ea173c4b324736\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Streets<\/a>, <a title=\"World Street Map (Night)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=86f556a2d1fd468181855a35e344567f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Streets (at Night)<\/a>, and <a title=\"World Navigation\" href=\"http:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=63c47b7177f946b49902c24129b87252\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Navigation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Some basemaps have multiple layers. This includes the <a title=\"World Topographic Map\" href=\"http:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=7dc6cea0b1764a1f9af2e679f642f0f5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Topographic<\/a>, <a title=\"World Street Map (with Relief)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=b266e6d17fc345b498345613930fbd76\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Streets (with Relief)<\/a>, <a title=\"Dark Gray Canvas web map\" href=\"http:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=358ec1e175ea41c3bf5c68f0da11ae2b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dark<\/a> and <a title=\"Light Gray Canvas web map\" href=\"http:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=979c6cc89af9449cbeb5342a439c6a76\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Light<\/a> Canvas (base and reference), and <a title=\"World Terrain with Labels\" href=\"http:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=a52ab98763904006aa382d90e906fdd5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Terrain with Labels<\/a> (base and reference) which all use <a title=\"World Hillshade\" href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=1b243539f4514b6ba35e7d995890db1d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Hillshade<\/a> as an underlying raster layer. <a title=\"Imagery Hybrid map\" href=\"http:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=28f49811a6974659988fd279de5ce39f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Imagery Hybrid<\/a> style includes <a title=\"World Imagery\" href=\"http:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=10df2279f9684e4a9f6a7f08febac2a9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Imagery<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If you added one of these multi-layer styles As Basemap, it would remove ALL the other layers in the basemap.\u00a0 For example:\u00a0 Imagery Hybrid basemap includes a raster Imagery layer plus the vector Hybrid Reference layer. You only want to update the vector layer. That&#8217;s why Add to map &gt; As Layer is the option for these styles.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">For these basemap styles, Add to map &gt; As Layer and manually configure these new layers in your basemap (see (A) below). When you add as layer, the new version (v2) layer is added as the top layer in your Content (B). Next, you should remove the older (v1) layer from within your basemap (C).<\/span><\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-96528 noIMGBackground\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2019\/12\/StepsABC.jpg\" alt=\"Adding Vector Tile Layer steps A B C\" width=\"600\" height=\"479\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Move the new layer into the basemap (see (D) below). Within the basemap you can order the layers so they appear as you intend (Move up\/Move down). The result looks like where you started, but now includes the new (v2) layer (E). In the case of the canvas styles or styles with relief or imagery, you will need to set the (v2) layer as a reference layer to ensure the correct display (F). You can always check the version of the map by clicking on the Show Item Details from the layer dropdown menu as detailed earlier in this blog. Save your web map.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-96530 noIMGBackground\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2019\/12\/StepsDEF.jpg\" alt=\"Adding layers steps D E F\" width=\"600\" height=\"388\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>These approaches to updating your web maps allow you take advantage of our new version (v2) of the Esri Vector Basemaps.
