With 3D data, we have to consider\u00a0not just\u00a0the\u00a0data\u2019s\u00a0horizontal (XY)\u00a0coordinate system but the\u00a0vertical\u00a0(Z)\u00a0coordinate system\u00a0as well.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2018\/01\/VerticalShift.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-97092\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2018\/01\/VerticalShift-300x224.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>As 3D content has\u00a0become more prevalent and\u00a0more users\u00a0convert\u00a0their data\u00a0from 2D to 3D, it\u2019s important to understand the significance of vertical coordinate systems and how they behave throughout the Esri platform.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The vertical coordinate system defines the origin for height and depth values. Without the correct vertical coordinate system defined, you may see your data incorrectly shifted vertically, this is especially relevant when working with datasets with different vertical coordinate systems.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"sidebar","content":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Types of Vertical Coordinate Systems\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>There are two main types of vertical coordinate systems; ellipsoidal and gravity-related.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px\"><strong>Ellipsoidal<\/strong> \u2013 Z-values are measured from a perfectly symmetrical ellipsoid. Most data collected via GNSS is in an ellipsoidal coordinate system.\u00a0 Includes WGS 1984, NAD 1984, and ITRF 2008.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px\"><strong>Gravity-related<\/strong> \u2013 Z-values are measured from an analytical surface that represents mean sea level. On average, the surface differs from local sea level by a meter. Because this model better reflects the real world, these are more commonly used to display and work with data. The green dashed line represents the gravity-related VCS.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Whether you are working with an ellipsoidal or gravity-related vertical coordinate system, there are 4 main properties of a vertical coordinate system; datum\u00a0or vertical datum, vertical shift, direction, and linear unit.<\/p>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0datum\u00a0in an ellipsoidal VCS or\u00a0vertical datum\u00a0in a gravity-related VCS, is\u00a0the reference point for elevation\u00a0values.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0vertical shift\u00a0sets\u00a0a built-in vertical offset,\u00a0automatically adding or subtracting from each Z-value.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0direction\u00a0determines if z-values\u00a0represent\u00a0height or\u00a0depth.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0linear unit\u00a0defines the unit of measurement for Z-values, generally in meters or feet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Transformations between Vertical Coordinate Systems<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Just as with horizontal coordinate systems, transformations provide accuracy\u00a0when working with multiple vertical coordinate systems.\u00a0But because scenes can easily switch between\u00a0local\u00a0and\u00a0global\u00a0view and global scenes support fewer vertical coordinate systems (details below), transformations may be required even when all of your data is in the same vertical coordinate\u00a0system.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>For example,\u00a0authoring a\u00a0scene in local view using\u00a0the\u00a0vertical coordinate system\u00a0EGM 1984 (a gravity-related vertical coordinate system\u00a0is\u00a0not supported in global view),\u00a0and\u00a0switching to global view\u00a0will drop the vertical coordinate system and your data will\u00a0shift.\u00a0Specifying\u00a0a valid vertical coordinate system, such as EGM 1996\u00a0and a transformation between\u00a0them will rectify the shift.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>To convert from\u00a0ellipsoidal\u00a0to ellipsoidal vertical coordinate systems,\u00a0the standard\u00a0horizontal coordinate system\u00a0transformations\u00a0are used.\u00a0To convert from ellipsoidal\u00a0to gravity-related\u00a0vertical coordinate systems or to go between two gravity-related vertical coordinate systems, file based VERTCON, geoid models, or equation based transformations not included by default\u00a0are needed.\u00a0Because of the complexity and size of these\u00a0transformations,\u00a0they\u00a0must be installed separately \u2013 available as\u00a0the\u00a0ArcGIS Coordinate Systems Data\u00a0installation\u00a0through myesri.com. These transformations must be installed anywhere they will be used, including your server if you share\u00a0web\u00a0layers that require a transformation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Although the number of transformations available continues to grow, there are far fewer transformations to go between vertical coordinate systems than for horizontal coordinate systems.\u00a0In the case that there is no transformation available, the linear unit will still be converted. For example, if your data is in feet but you set your scene in ArcGIS Pro to be\u00a0a VCS that uses meters, the elevation values will be converted on the fly to meters\u00a0\u2013 you may still see a shift but it will not be related to\u00a0a\u00a0mismatch in\u00a0linear unit.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Working with\u00a0Vertical Coordinate Systems\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>There are three main places where vertical coordinate systems are used \u2013 ArcGIS Pro, the\u00a0web\u00a0scene viewer and web applications that consume web scenes. When 3D content,\u00a0such as scene layers and elevation\u00a0layers,\u00a0are shared from ArcGIS Pro to be consumed in web scenes, their\u00a0vertical coordinate system\u00a0is\u00a0maintained.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>When working with vertical coordinate systems in ArcGIS Pro, there are fewer restrictions on what you can do than with web scenes and the scene viewer.\u00a0The following is supported in ArcGIS Pro but not in the scene viewer and web scenes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>You are able to have multiple vertical coordinate systems in the same scene<\/li>\n<li>A mismatch between the horizontal and vertical\u00a0linear units is\u00a0allowed<\/li>\n<li>Projection on the fly is\u00a0supported\u00a0for cached layers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Depending on the type of scene you are working with, local or global, different vertical coordinate systems are supported. Both require that the datum of the vertical coordinate system match the datum of the horizontal coordinate\u00a0system.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u00a0In ArcGIS Pro and the scene viewer, local scenes support both gravity-related and ellipsoidal vertical coordinate systems; if you don\u2019t have a vertical coordinate system, Z values are assumed to be in the unit of your\u00a0horizontal coordinate system.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>For global scenes in both ArcGIS Pro and the scene viewer, the only gravity-related vertical coordinate systems supported are EGM2008 and\u00a0EGM96.\u00a0Additionally,\u00a0all ellipsoidal vertical coordinate systems\u00a0are supported in ArcGIS Pro. As of January 2018,\u00a0only\u00a0WGS 1984,\u00a0EGM2008 and EGM96 vertical coordinate systems are supported in the global web scene\u00a0viewer; if you don\u2019t have a vertical coordinate system, Z values are assumed to be in meters.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>One of the many reasons why\u00a0ArcGIS Pro\u00a0is\u00a0so powerful is its support for\u00a0vertical coordinate system\u00a0transformations (i.e.\u00a0projecting on the fly). You can have multiple layers with different VCS and ArcGIS Pro will properly project the data on the fly. Keep in mind that this does come at a cost for performance as the software is required to make the necessary calculations for the data to line up correctly.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Client_VCS1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-97516\" src=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/app\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Client_VCS1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"786\" height=\"169\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For a list of supported Vertical Coordinate Systems in the web scene viewer see\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/resources.arcgis.com\/en\/help\/rest\/apiref\/vcs.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Vertical coordinate systems, just like horizontal coordinate systems, ensure the integrity of your data while editing, during visualization and analysis. Understanding how vertical coordinate systems behave throughout the Esri platform means you can be confident knowing what will happen to your data as you share and consume it in different applications.
