This is a great way to map landforms like mountains and valleys. They can map other phenomena too, like weather or pollution.<\/p>\n<h2>How do cartographers make contour lines?<\/h2>\n<p>The maps in this activity are made with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=58a541efc59545e6b7137f961d7de883\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">real elevation data<\/a>, but I have simplified it to make the activity easier. Most data in the real world is complex and messy, and drawing contour lines by hand is really hard!
