Validation also discovers any errors that may have introduced due to invalid geometry in the network. When issues are identified, error features are created with which can be inspected and fixed by editing the feature geometry for evaluation the next time the network topology is validated. Validation is your friend and is a cheap option when done throughout the editing process. Use it regularly to keep the network up to date. This ensures the accuracy and reliability of your trace results and diagram operations.

Check out the following video to learn more about working with the network topology and dirty areas in the trace network:

content

Tracing your network

Finally, let’s talk about tracing; it’s in the name after all. Don’t let the simple connectivity model fool you. The trace network includes a suite of tools and numerous options to perform robust network analysis.

There are four trace types available with the trace network.

Connected

Upstream

Downstream

Shortest Path

In simple networks, these four trace types enable you to answer most of might ask. For example, in a stream network, the connected trace returns everything with geometric connectivity to your starting point. Upstream traces can return the features above a gauge to help identify the source of a spill, and downstream traces return stream segments which could be impacted by such an event. The shortest path trace does just what it says and returns the shortest path between two points on the network using a cost, or weight to determine the best path.

Flow direction, network attributes, and other advanced options work in conjunction with barriers to control the traversability of features in the network. Trace network workflows leverage the digitized direction of lines with a Flow direction network attribute to support upstream and downstream analysis. Functions can be used to perform calculations and generate additional information from a trace.
