ArcGIS Dashboards lets you build informative dashboards that convey information using\u00a0<\/span>elements like charts, gauges, and more. These elements can interact with each other through the use of <\/span>actions<\/span><\/a>. Actions p<\/span>rovide a more interacti<\/span>ve<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>experience and<\/span>\u00a0allow you to give your dashboard a more focused context.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Actions are triggered<\/span>\u00a0on target element<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0when a user interacts with\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0source element<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>One type of action is a\u00a0<\/span>map action.<\/span><\/a>\u00a0Maps can be both the source\u00a0or\u00a0the target o<\/span>f<\/span>\u00a0an<\/span>\u00a0action. When they\u2019re the source<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>maps<\/span>\u00a0can be use<\/span>d\u00a0<\/span>to filter\u00a0<\/span>target elements\u00a0<\/span>as users change the map\u2019s extent.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Map actions are set in the map element\u2019s configuration in the\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/span>Map Actions<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>tab. From here, you can select the other elements on your dashboard that you want to filter as the map extent changes. While this action is great in some cases,\u00a0<\/span>it doesn\u2019t\u00a0<\/span>really\u00a0<\/span>allow for the most accurate\u00a0<\/span>results<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0A map\u2019s extent\u00a0<\/span>is limited by the\u00a0<\/span>basemap\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0level<\/span>\u00a0of detail<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>In addition, when authoring a dashboard that is going to be shared with the public,\u00a0<\/span>thes<\/span>e actions are better left out to allow your dashboard to work seamlessly when it\u2019s getting a lot of traffic. These actions are not\u00a0<\/span><\/span>cacheable<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0since it\u2019s impossible to predict where users will pan and zoom on a map<\/span><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>As a result,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0your dashboard can\u2019t leverage the platform\u2019s scalable infrastructure<\/span><\/span>. So, if you have<\/span><\/span>\u00a0hundreds or thousands of people panning and zooming at the same time, your dashboard\u2019s performance can suffer.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>You can learn more about how to optimize your dashboard for high demand use\u00a0<\/span><\/span>here<\/span><\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To do this, we ad<\/span>d<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>a new category selector in the header of our dashboard and used the administrative wards layer as our cate<\/span>gories.<\/span>\u00a0In the selector\u2019s configuration<\/span>, we\u00a0<\/span>set up actions so that once a ward is selected, the map will zoom on that ward and filter\u00a0<\/span>the other elements\u00a0<\/span>to match.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
