These tiny particles can be ingested into your lungs and bloodstream, causing a great risk for cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. (login required)<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/apps\/mapviewer\/index.html?webmap=a14213ba1d1948dfa8d7c1c64531f8f5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Which year had the worst air quality?<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In order to enact change where air quality is disproportionately impacting the population, governments or policymakers may want to explore each of the questions listed above. For example, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/sustainable-development-goals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United Nations Sustainable Development Goal<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/sdgs.un.org\/goals\/goal11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">11.6.2<\/a> sets a target to reduce the per capita impact of fine particulate matter. To do this, not only the raw PM 2.5 figures are needed, but also the population weighted figures. The animation below compares the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=eb0e3086f6d54554a84b7cd027de9c29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">aggregated PM 2.5 figures<\/a> (left) to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=b868eac4306c4d7f85501bd0d2f35ee9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">population weighted PM 2.5<\/a> figures (right). In areas with poor quality and high population, there is a disproportionate amount of people who are impacted.<\/p>\n<p>In the map below, pan around the map to compare the pattern you see in Europe to the pattern you see in Asia. For example, add the layer to your existing maps or favorite one of the Living Atlas maps and then add it to your story maps. <a href=\"https:\/\/storymaps.arcgis.com\/stories\/a3d0b0835b9e45b69f55e5ce94d84ddf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">This story map<\/a> explores the various different maps above through a guided experience.<\/p>\n<p>The layer and maps can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/livingatlas.arcgis.com\/en\/browse\/#d=2&amp;q=global%20air%20quality%20NASA&amp;rgnCode=WO\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">within ArcGIS Living Atlas of the World<\/a> and can also be found in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/group.html?id=41bc1befa45d48e3b0cc104e29976adf#overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this ArcGIS Online group<\/a>, seen below:<\/p>\n"},{"acf_fc_layout":"storymap","title":"","description":"","static":false,"storymap_url":"<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/apps\/MinimalGallery\/index.html?appid=6d98ba2d1dbe40bb98e848bc80e3e8b9\">https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/apps\/MinimalGallery\/index.html?appid=6d98ba2d1dbe40bb98e848bc80e3e8b9<\/a>"},{"acf_fc_layout":"content","content":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1><strong>How was the layer created?<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sedac.ciesin.columbia.edu\/data\/set\/sdei-global-annual-gwr-pm2-5-modis-misr-seawifs-aod\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NASA SEDAC\u2019s global annual gridded PM 2.5 data<\/a>\u00a0is derived from MODIS, MISR and SeaWiFS Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) with GWR, and consist of annual concentrations (micrograms per cubic meter) of ground-level fine particulate matter (PM2.5), with dust and sea-salt removed between 1998 and 2016.<\/p>\n<p>NASA\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sedac.ciesin.columbia.edu\/data\/set\/sdei-global-annual-gwr-pm2-5-modis-misr-seawifs-aod\/data-download\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WGS GeoTIFF files<\/a>\u00a0were first brought into a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pro.arcgis.com\/en\/pro-app\/help\/data\/imagery\/an-overview-of-multidimensional-data-in-a-mosaic-dataset.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">multidimensional mosaic dataset<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/en-us\/arcgis\/products\/arcgis-pro\/resources\">ArcGIS Pro 2.6.0<\/a>. This allowed the 19 years of data to be analyzed together within a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pro.arcgis.com\/en\/pro-app\/tool-reference\/space-time-pattern-mining\/learnmorecreatecube.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Space Time Cube,<\/a>\u00a0which allows us to visualize and analyze spatiotemporal data. From the Space Time Cube, we are able to analyze the data through a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pro.arcgis.com\/en\/pro-app\/tool-reference\/space-time-pattern-mining\/learnmorecreatecube.htm#ESRI_SECTION2_4518F0A12E194690AA986118D508E9F7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mann-Kendall trend<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pro.arcgis.com\/en\/pro-app\/tool-reference\/space-time-pattern-mining\/learnmoreemerging.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Emerging Hot Spot\u00a0<\/a>Tool for each geography level. These analyses provide us with the average annual PM 2.5 value for each year, the average value of PM 2.5 over the 19 years, the hot and cold spots, and the trend over time.<\/p>\n<p>In order to investigate the human impact, each geography level contains a population figure. These were derived from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcgis.com\/home\/item.html?id=92d3005feb84428a8f85160f2451ec63\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2016 World Population Estimate layer<\/a> from ArcGIS Living Atlas. The hex bin population figures were used to create a population-weighted figure for each area. 50km hex bins were used as the lowest level of analysis due to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0304380007001949\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research done by Birch, Oom, and Beecham<\/a>\u00a0in 2007.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/author\/kevi6890\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kevin Butler<\/a>, a Product Engineer on Esri\u2019s Analysis and Geoprocessing team designed this workflow, along with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esri.com\/arcgis-blog\/author\/lbuie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lynne Buie<\/a>\u00a0from the Spatial Statistics team at Esri.
