Overview


Esri is seeking a senior GIS engineer to help build layers, maps, and content that are used for ArcGIS Living Atlas of the World. The Living Atlas is the largest geospatial data collection in the world, is widely used across the ArcGIS platform, and is fast becoming the backbone of web GIS.

In this role, you will work with a team to define new information products that inform policymakers, business leaders, and the public on environmental policy and climate topics. In that work, you will manage the flow of data from source to online release as layers and maps, dashboards, apps, and StoryMaps. These layers, maps, and apps power Esri products that help decision-makers in all walks of life see the spatial patterns that are affecting their world.

You will work with content development and product engineer leads who are designing and developing production solutions, applications, and blogs and creating geospatial learning opportunities. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a project team leading the development of complex, state-of-the-art content systems that support policymakers, business leaders, and the public.

Responsibilities


  • Work with subject matter experts to document the questions that the information products need to answer.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to learn the existing processes that provide effective map services, feature layers, web maps, and information products
  • Review data deliverables to ensure they meet acceptance criteria and look for opportunities for improvement
  • Perform quality assurance (QA) tasks using QA checklists, improve QA processes when needed
  • Communicate with other teams to document and resolve issues
  • Create and maintain project plans, process documentation, and weekly status of progress
  • Maintain automation tools and work with the team to improve automation processes
  • Test and deploy web layers, maps, and application products to the Living Atlas of the World
  • Support software development teams as appropriate, with testing, feedback, sample data, and more
  • Present software demonstrations at both internal and external meetings
  • Transform and manipulate large tabular data sets such as data from the decennial census
  • Curate and audit Living Atlas nominations from high-profile customers, including federal agencies
  • Work with contributors to improve the quality of their Living Atlas items

Requirements


  • 3+ years of professional experience working with ArcGIS Pro and Online, including one year of experience publishing feature layers and maps in ArcGIS Online or Enterprise
  • Prior education or experience in public policy, quantitative social science, or data science
  • A passion for geographic knowledge and spatial thinking
  • A strong drive and interest to learn and launch new content quickly and work in a fast-paced development environment
  • Ability to design workflows and track progress and decisions accurately and efficiently
  • Excellent verbal, written communication, and in-person collaboration skills
  • Disciplined, process-oriented mindset
  • Master’s degree in geography, cartography, or GIS-related field
  • Experience using Jupyter Notebooks and Python

Recommended Qualifications


  • Geodatabase experience that includes basic data modeling and data loading in a production environment
  • Previous experience using maps as information products

Base salary is one component of our total rewards strategy. Compensation decisions and the base range for this role take into account many factors including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and organizational needs.

A reasonable estimate of the base salary range is
$85,280-$128,960 USD
